WARNING: The following contains spoilers for How I Met Your Father, currently streaming on Hulu.

How I Met Your Father is carving its own path as a tale about life and love in New York despite being a reboot of a beloved noughties sitcom. The series has diversified the cast and modernized the setting, but it still honors the original series with creative references scattered throughout the show. These are all the How I Met Your Mother Easter eggs in Season 1 of How I Met Your Father.

How I Met Your Father Recreated HIMYM’s Opening Credits

How I Met Your Father paid homage to its predecessor with a rendition of the original theme song in the opening credits. Indie musician Lennon Stellar created a cover of “Hey, Beautiful” by The Solids that is slightly toned compared to the original. The opening credits also feature a series of candid pictures of the group of friends much like the ones in How I Met Your Mother, with film negative borders to signify Sophie’s career in photography.

How I Met Your Father Begins with a Proposal

Sophie and Ted are all about romance and love, so it’s only fitting that their respective stories would begin with a marriage proposal. Lily and Marshall were the first established couple in HIMYM and got engaged in the pilot episode. Similarly, Sophie crashed Sid’s proposal to Hannah in the HIMYF pilot after she accidentally took Sid’s phone from Jesse’s car.

HIMYF’s Sid and Jesse Moved Into Ted and Marshall’s Apartment

Every “single group of friends” sitcom has one central apartment that becomes a hub for the social group, so it’s no surprise that apartment 4C has become an iconic location in the show. It started out as Ted and Marshall’s post-college home, but Lily moved in eventually and Robin even stayed there with Ted for a few years. Everyone eventually moved out as their families grew and the apartment was rented by people outside of the group. Those people happened to be Sid and Jesse, who found a posting about it in a Wesleyan University Alumni Group.

How I Met Your Father Brings Back the “Have You Met Ted?” Pick-Up Line

Ellen moved to New York to reconnect with her brother and move on with her life after her divorce. She and Jesse both wanted to meet new people and referred to themselves as sibling wing-people, or “wing-sibs,” on a mission to get each other partnered up. Jesse was enthusiastic about this development in their relationship and introduced Ellen to a woman at Sophie’s party with the line, “Have you met Ellen?” This is a callback to Barney’s favorite game, “Have you met Ted?,” where he would introduce Ted to different women at the bar.

How I Met Your Mother’s Favorite Brand of Whisky Makes a Brief Appearance

Glen McKenna is an expensive brand of scotch whisky that appeared throughout the course of HIMYM. The gang usually drank the whisky when they had something to celebrate, and there was a running gag where they would accidentally break a few bottles. Glen McKenna was briefly referenced in HIMYF when Sophie visited a bar that had a wall advertising the scotch brand behind her.

How I Met Your Father Repeats Ted’s Mistake on the First Date

Jesse and Ted may have different views on romance and dating, but there is an embarrassing habit that they have in common. Sophie and Jesse had their first date in the season finale and things went so well that Sophie ended up spending the night at Jesse’s place. She was pretty happy with how the date turned out until she heard Jesse saying “I love you, Sophie” in his sleep. Ted Mosby made a similar mistake in the HIMYM pilot episode when he told Robin that he loves her on their first date.

Valentina Continues a How I Met Your Mother Tradition with a Sweet Surprise

Charlie’s attempt to get his new friends to watch soccer seemed a bit strange until he confessed to Valentina that he was feeling homesick. She felt bad that he left his home country for her and surprised him by bringing England to his apartment. This included filling his room with Union Jack flags, dressing up as a Spice Girl and communicating using cards like Mark in Love Actually. Barney made a similar gesture for Robin in HIMYM when he planned a Canadian-themed rehearsal dinner because they couldn’t get married in Canada.

Ellen Gets a Job with a Giant Company from How I Met Your Mother

Goliath National Bank is a corporation that Ted, Marshall and Barney had all worked for at some point in the series. While no one in HIMYF is currently employed at the bank, Ellen had a successful job interview with the Goliath Market corporate office in the episode “Jay Street.”

The Captain Returns in HIMYF with Boats Boats Boats Becky

George Van Smoot, aka The Captain, made a surprise appearance in “Jay Street” while older-Sophie told her story. The Captain is a boat lover who was briefly married to Zoey Pierson, who then divorced him to be with Ted. He later began dating Robin’s perky co-anchor, Becky, also known as the star of the Boats Boats Boats advert. The Captain and Becky’s divorce intertwined with Sophie’s love story because they were involved with the marine biology team that Sophie’s Tinder date, Ian, had joined.

How I Met Your Mother’s Pineapple Incident Mystery is Finally Solved

Every HIMYM Easter Egg in How I Met Your Father Season 1

The mystery of the Pineapple Incident was finally solved after 17 years of speculation. Back in 2005, Barney had convinced Ted to go out drinking with him and let loose for one night. Ted had too much to drink and blacked out, waking up the next day with a sprained ankle, a woman in his bed, a burnt coat and a pineapple on his nightstand. Ted managed to piece together the events of the previous night but never figured out where he got the pineapple. In the HIMYF finale, The Captain mentioned that his divorce hurt as much as getting a pineapple stolen from his porch in 2005.

HIMYF’s Sophie Visits the Legendary Pub from How I Met Your Mother

Many fans were hoping that MacLaren’s Pub would become a hangout spot for Sophie’s crew, but this never happened because they spend most of their time at Sid’s bar, Pemberton’s. Sophie happened to visit MacLaren’s when she needed some time to think about Jesse and she remarked on how strange it was that her friends never went there. The pub still looked exactly the same, and it was a nice surprise to see Carl back in his old spot behind the bar.

Robin Scherbatsky Makes A Surprise Appearance in How I Met Your Father

It was only a matter of time until a member of the original gang made an appearance in HIMYF. Colbie Smulders made a surprise cameo as Robin Scherbatsky and gave Sophie some helpful advice about her relationship with Jesse. At this point in Robin’s life, she and Barney would have been divorced and Ted would have recently gotten married to Tracy. Robin and Sophie shared a drink at the gang’s old booth where she eased Sophie’s worries with a callback to her relationship with Barney: timing is everything.

Catch up with Sophie and the gang in How I Met Your Father, now streaming on Hulu.
