With the Season 21 return of the original Law and Order in February, Thursday nights on NBC now boast a triple threat of Law and Order shows. The lineup starts off with the rebooted Law and Order, slides into the long-running Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and ends the night with the newcomer, Law and Order: Organized Crime. And much like the One Chicago block of shows airing on Wednesdays on NBC, this shared world is a bonanza ripe for crossover possibilities.

The many crossovers of the One Chicago shows give the Law and Order franchise a ready-made blueprint from which to springboard its own events. As well, since Law and Order: SVU and Organized Crime are connected by their lead characters and have already done guest spots and minor crossovers, the precedent is there. This multi-show, shared world event strategy has been successful for the One Chicago shows, and it would not be difficult to translate that success into Law and Order.

While the world of Law and Order shows hasn’t been well known for such events, there have been some. Earlier seasons of the original show had characters appear on SVU and Law and Order: Criminal Intent, plus the franchise is known for giving a boost to its newer shows. The short-lived Law and Order: Los Angeles was launched as part of a two-part crossover with Law and Order: SVU, and Law and Order: Trial by Jury also had an SVU crossover.

And the structure of the shows makes it fairly easy for characters to pop in and out without difficult explanations; cases and trials could comfortably overlap and intertwine. Plus, each show has one long-time Law and Order veteran still attached, giving a good foundation for interaction. Fans love any excuse to see the characters of Benson and Stabler — Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni, respectively — working together and it would be another reunion of sorts by adding in DA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston).

So what would a possible crossover show look like? One scenario could have a criminal case from Law and Order take a turn into something more sinister after the suspect makes a deal; the resulting information would then tie into SVU’s and Organized Crime’s specific show themes. A human trafficking ring with underworld connections, perhaps? Such a high-profile case would keep Jack McCoy and the DA’s office involved as well. Another feasible prospect would be to crossover an already existing storyline. Since Law and Order: Organized Crime tends to have serialized plots, dropping one of its criminals into the other two shows for additional mayhem is a good fit.

The world of Law and Order has always been connected and the current three iterations have the closest links for any of the shows, especially Law and Order: SVU and Organized Crime. It’s a natural evolution to have crossover events and a contiguous relationship between the shows. Exploring a storyline over three hours can only enhance the depth, drama and rich characterization of Law and Order.

All three Law and Order shows air Thursday nights on NBC.
