The following article contains spoilers from Batgirls #6, on sale now.

While working alongside the Batgirls, Oracle had been captured by Spellbinder but managed to turn the tables on him. In Batgirls #6 (by Beckly Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Jorge Corona, Sarah Stern, and Becca Carey) she accomplished this by loosening her bindings just enough to be partially free and then proceeded to knock him out while tied to the chair. This is similar to the scene from Avengers where Black Widow pulled the same stunt on some military officials.

The only difference is that what Oracle pulled off was more impressive. While both women are exceptional fighters, Oracle had the odds stacked against her more than Black Widow did. The fact that she came out on top in the end proves that her chair maneuver was the better victory.

Black Widow’s chair fight scene was a scenario she had complete control over. She knew she could easily escape her bindings, she only needed to listen to her “captor” prattle on about his plans until she had what she needed. When she was called away from the mission, however, she quickly demonstrated just how easily she could handle three soldiers even while tied up. She eventually broke the chair entirely by smashing it on one of her opponents.

Oracle’s situation was somewhat similar. While tied up she had to listen to Spellbinder’s monologue about his plans and motivations, using his inability to shut up to cut through her bonds enough to free her arms. From there, the fight became rather one-sided in her favor. After she had been injured by the Joker, Barbara spent years increasing her upper body strength so that she wouldn’t be helpless if someone came after her.

That fact, along with her already extensive combat skills, came in handy as she gave Spellbinder a much-deserved beating. However, where things became more difficult for her than it was for Black Widow was when Spellbinder drugged her with fear toxin. Fortunately, she’s also had years of experience dealing with the chemical and was able to fight off the effects and knock him out, all while still being partially bound to the chair.

While Black Widow may have been up against three men, they were people that weren’t on the same level as her in any regard. She was in complete control of the situation at all times, and even if she wasn’t there was backup waiting just outside for her. Oracle on the other hand could rely on no one but herself. Her Batgirls were busy saving lives, so she was on her own.

The drugs and partial bindings only hindered her even further. On top of that, she was going up against an actual supervillain, someone who could challenge the Bat-Family in some capacity. Her odds of victory were slimmer than Black Widow’s were, but she managed to pull the win. She used all the lessons she had learned about herself from facing adversity to triumph over yet another criminal who underestimated just how tough she was. In comparison, knocking out three dopes who were used purely for comedic effect doesn’t really seem as impressive.
