Every Major KOTOR Reference In Star Wars The Old Republic

The MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is set about three hundred years after the events of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) series, serving as less of a direct continuation and more of a spiritual successor. Despite the vast gap in the timeline, though, there are some notable references to the events of KOTOR within Star Wars: The Old Republic. Some are much smaller than others, and may be easily overlooked, where others are much more heavy-handed.

Knights of the Old Republic has seen some renewed attention as of late thanks to rumors of a KOTOR remake being developed, though there’s been little concrete confirmation of this and it’s unclear when exactly it would potentially be releasing. Because of this, some fans of the original games have been turning to Star Wars: The Old Republic to experience a similar storyline to what was featured in KOTOR. Although some classes stick more closely to the tone of the originals than others do – the Jedi Knight class in particular comes to mind in this regard – almost every class can encounter significant references to the KOTOR titles as they progress through the game.

SWTOR’s gameplay is relatively close to KOTOR’s, as well, featuring dialogue choices, companions, and even romance options similar to other RPGs, particularly other BioWare games. It focuses on the roleplaying aspect of the story more than many other MMO titles do, helping to add to the feeling of continuity despite the many differences to be found between the titles. Although there are arguably too many nods to KOTOR to list, here are a few of the most noteworthy references.

SWTOR’s Major KOTOR References – All Of Taris

Taris is one of the major locations featured in Knights of the Old Republic, and serves as a starting area for players who progress past the tutorial aboard the Endar Spire. As such, those who return to Taris in Star Wars: The Old Republic will be greeted with a wide host of references to the events of the KOTOR story. Even the Endar Spire makes an appearance there: Endar Spire Crash Site is an area that players can visit, and a codex entry that’s unlocked there reveals the fate of the ship over the intervening years. Taris itself is effectively a walking reference to the events of KOTOR as a whole, appearing as little more than a wasteland that the Republic is trying to rebuild. Rakghouls, hostile mobs from the first KOTOR game, appear there as well, and there are a few more specific references to be found that involve them. The rakghoul plague serum can be found in storage at the old hospital, and the Promised Land that Revan was able to help guide the settlers of the Undercity to is mentioned during their travels. This could be argued to imply that Revan’s light side turn is canon lore. Even the old swoop tracks from KOTOR 1 appear.

SWTOR’s Major KOTOR References – Audio And Visual References

For more observant players, there are a couple audio references located throughout Star Wars: The Old Republic. One can be accessed through a jukebox in the Ord Mantell cantina: the track named “For The Republic” that’s playable there can be heard on the main screen of Knights of the Old Republic. This is one reference that may eventually become outdated if the remake were to redo the music from the original, which could be likely if the game is redone to focus more on action and combat than RPG elements. Those who listen closely to NPC names may find a few familiar surnames as they encounter descendants of side characters from the KOTOR series. Bounty Hunter characters are also given the option to mimic one of Calo Nord’s more iconic moments from KOTOR, counting down backwards just as he did in one of his earlier confrontations. Some of the headgear and other wearable objects heavily resemble items that players could utilize for customization in KOTOR, helping to further tie together the continuing story of the series.

SWTOR’s Major KOTOR References – KOTOR’s Companions

The player’s companions from the KOTOR games don’t directly appear within SWTOR – given how much time has passed between the titles, it’s unlikely any would still be alive to begin with – but they are mentioned in multiple different ways throughout the game. One of the ships helping with the Maelstron Prison breakout is named the Onasi, presumably after Carth Onasi, a companion and romance option from the first KOTOR title.

More directly, players are able to encounter Satele Shan, who is a direct descendant of another KOTOR companion and love interest, Bastila. Smugglers are able to run across an item labeled as the skull of Canderous Ordo, and at one point players can also go to retrieve the lost writings of Jedi Grandmaster Mical – one of few references pointing towards the second game of the KOTOR series, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment rather than BioWare. It could potentially also be argued that Vette is a subtle nod to Mission Vao in terms of personality; they even share the same voice actress.

SWTOR’s Major KOTOR References – Corellia Holostatues

Arguably the largest reference to the Knights of the Old Republic companions, however, can be found on Corellia. While on the planet, players can be given a mission named “Restore The Statues”. The mission objective states that Mandalorians – which also featured heavily in both KOTOR and KOTOR 2 – have deactivated the holostatues situated along the Cross of Glory walk, located in Axial Park. When the mission is completed, it’s revealed that the holostatues are of the heroes of the Jedi Civil War. More specifically, they display Revan and their companions: Juhani, Canderous Ordo, Carth Onasi, Bastila Shan, Mission Vao, Jolee Bindo, and Zaalbar. Although the robotic crewmates of the game are excluded from the display, it’s a significant nod to the events of the first game and the characters many fans grew attached to.

It’s unclear how many of the iconic elements from Knights of the Old Republic will reappear if the game is eventually remade, but it’s unlikely that the largest parts of the lore will change – or, at least, change enough to significantly impact the references found in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Although it may take players multiple playthroughs to encounter all of these elements within the game, especially given the many different class storylines that are included in SWTOR and its expansions, players who are significantly invested in KOTOR may find it worthwhile to learn how the timeline continued following the events of the original games.
