The level of success that the Conjuring Universe has seen in less than a decade is undeniably impressive. The franchise began in 2013 with director James Wan’s The Conjuring, introducing a huge number of movie fans to the work of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Since then, the series of movies has branched out in various spinoffs and sequels, but which of them are ranked the highest by the film fans on Letterboxd? While generally massive successes at the box office, critics and fans have greeted each entry in the universe with varying degrees of approval. 8 The Curse of La Llorona (2019) – 2.0

One of the now numerous spinoffs of the mainline Conjuring movies, The Curse of La Llorona is very tentatively connected to the rest of the universe via a cameo appearance of one character who only briefly appeared in the first Conjuring spinoff, Annabelle.
The story follows a widowed mother as she becomes stalked by the Weeping Woman from the titular folklore who threatens the lives of her two children. The movie ultimately sticks to the fundamentals of the universe yet it performed worse than usual with fans, taking in the lowest box office cume for a Conjuring franchise movie so far.
7 The Nun (2018) – 2.1

Spun off from a villain first seen within the series in The Conjuring 2, The Nun is another prequel that ultimately ties back into the first Conjuring movie, though it wasn’t enough to remind most critics or even fans of the highest points of the franchise.
Nevertheless, the movie became the highest-grossing entry in the universe so far at the box office and had a sequel promptly greenlit. Its story of a small team of misfit investigators looking into strange goings-on at an isolated Romanian convent certainly afforded more opportunities for conventional horror movie setpieces, but the fans of the movies evidently prefer the more grounded adventures of The Warrens.
6 Annabelle (2014) – 2.3

The second movie in the Conjuring Universe was not as successful with either critics or fans of the original in general as the franchise’s later success might imply. Its story followed a possessed doll seen in the original movie and provided the first part of an origin story that would be deepened in a later–and much more successful–follow-up.
The movie still made plenty at the box office, however, and producers were not deterred from the idea of making the Conjuring movies into a bonafide connected universe, but the period setting and emotional domestic drama were less impactful than they were in the original, despite Annabelle being directed by the first movie’s cinematographer, John R. Leonetti.
5 Annabelle Comes Home (2019) – 2.6

The third Annabelle spinoff took a very different approach than not only the other Annabelle movies but the rest of the Conjuring Universe, taking a much more relaxed, comedic, and even family-friendly tone while still keeping the classic jump scares that the Conjuring franchise is known for. It wasn’t as successful as the previous Annabelle movie with either critics or audiences despite the first appearances of Ed and Lorraine Warren to bookend the story.
The main plot revolves around the Warrens’ daughter, Judy, who steps up to a leading role after appearing in earlier movies. It’s also mostly confined to the Warrens’ home, cementing it as a kind of HQ for the overarching series. But the lighter tone wasn’t for all of the franchise’s longtime fans.
4 The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) – 2.9

The third of the mainline Conjuring movies that revolve around the cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Devil Made Me Do It was taken from the Warrens’ involvement in the exorcism of David Glatzel and the following murder trial of Arne Johnson.
The Curse of La Llorona director Michael Chaves took over from original Conjuring director James Wan and fans have ranked it up with the better half of the franchise so far. However, it remains to be seen whether it will truly make as much of an impact with fans in the long run, especially when compared to the first two Conjuring movies with the Warrens.
3 Annabelle: Creation (2017) – 3.0

Though it doesn’t feature the Warrens, the second Annabelle movie is the most well-regarded of the Conjuring Universe spinoff movies by quite a margin. Another prequel to their appearance in the original Conjuring, Creation goes back even further in the history of the titular doll to tell the story of its very making.
Directed by James Wan’s fellow hit DCEU director David F. Sandberg, the shocks and atmosphere in the story of the demonic doll terrorizing a secluded girl’s home impressed fans of the franchise and general audiences, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies to date within the Conjuring series.
2 The Conjuring 2 (2016) – 3.4

Achieving a very similar degree of success with both critics and audiences as the original Conjuring movie did, The Conjuring 2 took the Warrens to London to investigate the highly publicized Enfield haunting.
The main villain for the following spin-off The Nun was introduced along with a host of other standout frights and monsters, another of which, The Crooked Man, got their own spin-off movie quickly greenlit in the wake of the movie’s success. After the lackluster reaction from critics and audiences to the first Annabelle movie, it secured the Conjuring Universe as a franchise with serious staying power.

It’s not unusual for even the most successful and long-running movie franchises to have their first entries remain as the most popular in the eyes of either critics or fans and The Conjuring is no exception. James Wan’s hugely popular horror movie used the careers of Ed and Lorraine Warren as a window into a wider world of spiritualism and the supernatural whilst keeping a much-appreciated focus on good old-fashioned drama and dynamic camera movement.
The results evoked a lot of the carefully crafted qualities of the classic cinema from the story’s 1970s time period, not only adding to the atmosphere but giving horror fans a level of extra detail to chew on beyond what’s usually offered by the multiplex-friendly horror.
