The old CBS All-Access streaming service got a makeover in 2021 and officially became Paramount+, which has seemingly had better success so far. The service has debuted a steady stream of feature films since launching, with some being exclusive original content and a few that were simultaneously released in movie theaters.

These films ranged in genres from comedies to sci-fi action to special versions of hit television shows. The reviews for these movies were mixed, with some getting blasted by critics and subscribers and others being viewed as strong projects. The ratings on IMDb are a great way to see which ones are considered worth watching.

10 The J Team (3.6)

A lot of JoJo Siwa’s 2021 was massive. She officially came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community to start the year and delivered impressive dances weekly on Dancing with the Stars, where she placed second overall. However, her movie wasn’t as well received.

The J Team sees Siwa play a fictional version of herself who is kicked out of her dance team when a strict new instructor (Tisha Campbell) takes over. Clearly aimed at children, this Nickelodeon film was blasted with low scores on IMDb, though the audience rating is at least at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, so there’s hope for it.

9 Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin (5.2)

The Paranormal Activity franchise is one of the most profitable in horror history since most are made for a small budget and go on to perform well at the box office. After the 2015 installment was promoted as the final film, a new one arrived this year exclusively on Paramount+.

This new take on the series is Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, which sees a young woman visit a small Amish community in hopes of finding out answers about her birth mother when spooky things begin happening. Many felt there are good ideas and scares in the movie but it couldn’t recapture the magic of the original.

8 Infinite (5.5)

On paper, it certainly felt like Infinite could be the big tentpole movie that Paramount+ latches itself onto. With leading actors like Mark Wahlberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor, as well as an intriguing concept based on the novel The Reincarnation Papers, this had a lot going for it.

In the film, Evan McCauley (Wahlberg) starts having visions he’s not used to and finds he has skills he never learned, which turn out to be from past lives. Some of the action sequences were met with solid praise but the screenplay and some performances were considered less favorably.

7 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (6.0)

Technically, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is actually a 2020 film. That’s when it was released in Canada but it didn’t come to other countries until the launch of Paramount+, arriving on day one.

Another in a line of films based on the popular Spongebob Squarepants television show, this changes things up by being completely CGI instead of using 2D animation. The movie sees Spongebob embark on a major adventure as he attempts to rescue his pet snail, Gary, from being kidnapped. This was lauded for being funny and faithful to the source material.

6 Clifford The Big Red Dog (6.0)

One of the films to get a simultaneous release in theaters as well as Paramount+, Clifford the Big Red Dog is the somewhat long-awaited big-screen adaptation of the iconic children’s book series. That means it follows in the footsteps of Curious George and Where the Wild Things Are.

If you’ve read the books before then you’re sure to know what the story is about, centering on the titular red dog who grows to a massive size and is loved by his human. Though not considered to be a great movie, many reviewers felt it is enough to keep kids engaged and dog lovers will appreciate it.

5 Rumble (6.1)

After some real struggles early on, WWE Studios has managed to quietly put out some solid films. Their most notable was certainly 2019’s Fighting with my Family but they recently added a Netflix movie for kids and now they can include a fun animated film on Paramount+.

Rumble takes place in a world where giant monsters compete in wrestling matches and a young girl hopes to lead an underdog creature all the way to the championship. It is considered a blast and has a wild voice cast including Will Arnett, Ben Schwartz, ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, and wrestlers Roman Reigns and Becky Lynch.

4 PAW Patrol: The Movie (6.2)

One of the most popular children’s TV shows out now is PAW Patrol. The series follows a group of search and rescue dogs who protect those around them. Due to how beloved it is, it only makes sense to add a feature film to the mix, which is what happened this year.

PAW Patrol: The Movie takes what works about the TV show and puts it on a bigger scale. The premise is simple as the dogs must stop a corrupt mayor from turning the entire city into chaos. Critics and audiences alike were seen to be big fans of this adorable little adventure.

3 Queenpins (6.3)

The final of three movies to get the simultaneous release (second chronologically) was Queenpins. The film centers on the absurd story of two struggling women who begin a $40 million couponing scam and that ridiculous setup is exactly what works about the movie.

Everything is pretty wacky right from the start and it is only helped by the tremendous comedic talents of Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Paul Walter Hauser. There were some issues with some lowbrow humor that held this back though.

2 South Park: Post COVID (7.7)

People always talk about how impressive the long run of The Simpsons is and while that’s certainly true, it means the outstanding history of South Park can go overlooked. Running successfully since the late ’90s, the raunchy animated show is still going strong.

A reason for its success is that it always seems to remain topical, which is clear in the television movie South Park: Post COVID. The story jumps 40 years into the future with the main children now being adults who lived through the COVID pandemic. Reviews were solid, saying it was a good start to a larger story.

1 South Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID (7.9)

That larger tale continued in the sequel, South Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID, which was released a few weeks later. This takes a more intriguing approach as Stan, Kyle, and Cartman come together to time travel to prevent COVID from happening and save Kenny’s life.

As is often the case with South Park, the reception for the film was strong as it hit on many topical subjects while also working as a fun parody of Avengers: Endgame in many ways.
