Celebrating its 19th anniversary later in 2021, Ratchet & Clank has featured a lot of really fun games over the years. It’s a series known for consistently delivering on its wacky gameplay throughout its run.

In just a few months, the Ratchet & Clank series will make its debut on PlayStation 5 with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. It’ll mark the first new entry to the main series, not counting 2016’s Ratchet & Clank remake, in almost eight years. Rift Apart will serve as the first real test for the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and is one of the year’s most anticipated games.

Each main entry to the Ratchet & Clank series has introduced a new mechanic to the gameplay. In the case of the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, interdimensional rifts between worlds will serve as the game’s core mechanic. But with a new title coming, it’s a great time to take a look back and rank the series’ main entries.

8. The Worst Ratchet & Clanks: Quest for Booty & Into the Nexus

It’s tough to separate Quest for Booty and Into the Nexus. Both games were smaller installments to the series that were more along the lines of DLC-type expansions as opposed to full Ratchet & Clank experiences.

Ratchet & Clank was the game that started it all, which naturally carries nostalgia for fans. The game introduced a beloved world and an action platforming series that is still going strong nearly two decades later, but the gameplay was rough around the edges due to a lack of strafing, and it does not feel as polished as later titles would.

6. Ratchet: Deadlocked

Deadlocked changed up the formula quite a bit by separating Clank from Ratchet, transforming him into a space gladiator. Stripped of Clank’s various tools, Ratchet: Deadlocked focused purely on the gunplay as an arena combat game.

Ratchet: Deadlocked was a diversion for the series that provided a pretty fun cooperative experience.

5. Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction

Tools of Destruction brought Ratchet & Clank to the PlayStation 3 but that was really it in terms of advancements. Although the game featured weapon modifications it was still a fairly generic entry to the Ratchet & Clank series and, especially compared to the following games on this list, was largely forgettable.

4. Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando

With the world and characters established, Going Commando made a significant improvement to the original’s gameplay with the introduction of strafing. Strafing became a staple of the series’ gunplay and formed an identity for what Ratchet & Clank would be moving forward.

3. Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time

A Crack in Time was the better of the two games in the Future series, with high-quality gameplay and a once-again-separated Ratchet and Clank, allowing for both combat and puzzle-heavy sections of the game. Another Lombax by the name of Alister Azimuth was also featured here in one of the series’ best stories.

2. Ratchet & Clank (2016)

Ratchet & Clank (2016) was a complete reimagining of the first game, released in tandem with a film by the same name. The remake was the series’ only entry on the PlayStation 4, featuring new weapons, beautiful visuals, and significantly better gameplay than the original.

Up Your Arsenal refined all of the best parts of the first two games in the Ratchet & Clank series and combined them into one. It continued to build on all of Going Commando’s gameplay enhancements while maintaining the charm of the first game, and it remains the crown jewel of the series.

Insomniac Games has done a terrific job consistently delivering fun and new gameplay experiences in Ratchet & Clank since its inception. Each main entry to the series brings something new to the table, and that trend promises to continue with the upcoming release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
