Every Returning Character In Monsters At Work

The new Disney+ series Monsters at Work brings in a new class of laughter-inducing monsters, while also bringing back several of Monsters, Inc.’s beloved characters. Monsters, Inc. was one of the first major Pixar films following the success of Toy Story. The movie even won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2002 and was nominated for Best Animated Feature, losing to Shrek. The heartwarming animated feature was the directorial debut of Pete Docter, who has gone on to direct award-winning Pixar movies Up, Inside Out, and Soul.

Monsters, Inc. followed James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, two employees of the titular company that creates energy by scaring human children. Monsters have been taught that children are toxic and mustn’t be touched, so when a young girl, Boo, escapes her door into the world of the monsters, Mike and Sulley have to return Boo before anyone else finds out. Monsters University was released 12 years later as a prequel, following Mike and Sully as they meet in college to become career scarers. The duo starts out as roommates and rivals, though they grow to become the best friends and partners seen in Monsters, Inc.

In a series of attempts to reboot Disney’s older, popular properties, Monsters, Inc. now has its own television series, albeit not focusing on Mike and Sulley. Most of Disney+’s new reboot series have been geared at slightly older audiences, while Monsters at Work focuses on the younger viewers with a cast of new characters. Although not the nostalgia-based revival that those who grew up on Monsters, Inc. may have hoped for, the Monsters at Work cast of characters features the return of many of the original movie’s beloved characters.

Mike Wazowski

The little green meme-inducing, one-eyed monster returns in a small role for Monsters at Work. Voiced by comedian Billy Crystal, Mike Wazowski is the best friend and business partner of now CEO Sulley, who were both the focus of Monsters, Inc. and its prequel Monsters University. Mike is the funny, dedicated friend who typically is overshadowed by the primary scarer Sulley, and is initially against the idea of helping Boo in Monsters, Inc. Once Sulley and Mike advocate for changing the company’s approach to generating energy by making children laugh instead of scream, Mike becomes a successful comedian who makes the children laugh more than his scarier predecessors. Mike reveals in Monsters University that he always dreamed of becoming a top scarer, but finds a better home in the college’s misfit fraternity Oozma Kappa. In Monsters at Work, Mike is still performing comedy to kids to make energy for the monsters.

James P. “Sulley” Sullivan

Sulley returns to the Monsters, Inc. world in Monsters at Work with a minor role as the company’s new CEO, with John Goodman reprising his voice acting role. In the events of Monsters, Inc., Sully is the company’s top scarer as a frighteningly large, beast-like monster who competes with the slimy lizard-like villain Randall. Sully happens upon a young girl named Boo in the factory after scaring her. He vows to protect Boo and return her to her door while discovering that he takes no joy in scaring human children anymore. In Monsters University, Sully navigates learning how to scare at college, after which he and Mike earn jobs at Monsters, Inc.

Celia Mae

Mike Wazowski’s high-strung receptionist girlfriend Celia Mae from Monsters, Inc. returns to the facility as a newly promoted Laugh Floor supervisor. Jennifer Tilly, also known for Family Guy, reprises her role as Celia’s voice. Celia is a one-eyed monster with snake hair reminiscent of a Medusa/Cyclops combination. She’s notable for referring to Mike in cutesy nicknames like “Googley Bear” while Mike returns the affection by calling her “Schmoopsie-poo.” She has an explosive temper but can calm down quite quickly. Celia had a primary role in Monsters, Inc., but was notably absent aside from a photograph in Monsters University.

Roz

The slow, raspy-voiced secretary monster from Monsters Inc. returns in the new series after having been revealed as a secret agent. The grouchy slug was responsible for all of the paperwork filed by Mike, who rarely submitted his forms on time. Roz allowed the Monsters, Inc. incident with Boo, Mike, and Sully to slide, telling Mike to not file the paperwork. She makes a small cameo in Monsters University when Mike and Sully are taken by the CDA. Roz’s revelation as Agent Number 001 and the leader of the Child Detection Agency (CDA) means her newly-added twin sister, Roze, takes over her old undercover secretary position. Voice actor Bob Peterson reprises the role that he originated in Monsters, Inc., also now providing the voice for Roze.

Ms. Flint

Bonnie Hunt reprises her role in Monsters at Work as Ms. Flint, first seen in Monsters, Inc. as the titular company’s new scarer training supervisor. She returns in Monsters University in a non-speaking cameo, though her actress Bonnie Hunt also voiced Mike’s first-grade teacher in that movie. Ms. Flint makes a recurring appearance in Monsters at Work as the monster teacher who runs the Monsters, Inc. simulation room.

Yeti

The friendly monster that Mike and Sully encountered after entering the wrong door in Monsters, Inc. returns in a recurring role in Monsters at Work. Yeti, voiced by John Ratzenberger, was previously exiled to the Himalayas for tampering with mail, though actually enjoyed living in the human world. The Sno-cone-loving Yeti also returns in Monsters University before his banishment as a mail sorter at Monsters, Inc.

Smitty and Needleman

The goofy, dim-witted Monsters, Inc. maintenance and errand workers make small appearances in both Monsters, Inc. and Monsters at Work. Smitty is a light-green, short, four-armed, slug-like monster, while Needleman is a skinny, horned, red-nosed monster. The two reappear with their same jobs in Monsters at Work, while Stephen Stanton reprises his voice role as both characters.

George Sanderson

In one of the most memorable sequences from the original movie, George Sanderson returned from a scare task with a child’s sock on his back, prompting Code 2319 where the CDA must scrub, shave, and remove human traces from his body. The same misfortune happens to George in Monsters University and again in Monsters at Work.

Minor Returning Characters

Professor Knight: Mike and Sully’s professor from Monsters University reprises his role in an early scene from Monsters at Work where he oversees Tylor Tuskmon’s Scaring Finals test.

Jeff Fungus: The three-eyed, glasses-wearing monster from Monsters, Inc. who was formerly Randall’s assistant returns in Monsters at Work as Mike’s new assistant.

Thaddeus “Phlegm” Bile: Bile was known as a nervous, forgetful trainee in Monsters, Inc. who comes back in Monsters at Work as a successful comedian.
