The Stargate franchise has been a sci-fi icon since the original movie was released in 1994. The show revolves around the Einstein-Rosen bridge concept, a commonly accepted theory of spacetime that suggests the existence of wormholes. As with these theoretical portals a Stargate can be used to travel great distances across the cosmos almost instantaneously.

In 1997, due to the success of the first movie, the first Stargate TV show aired, and the show started to grow a niche audience of devoted fans. There have since been 4 more TV shows, one spawning a further 2 spin-off movies, with each new iteration gaining its own Star Trek-esque sub-following. Though they weren’t all equally well-received by the masses, at least, according to IMDb.

8 SGI Stargate: Infinity (3.6/10)

Stargate: Infinity, known by fans as SGI or simply “Infinity,” is a French-American animated series that ran from 2002-2003. It is a spin-off of SG-1 but though it is part of the franchise, Infinity isn’t considered official Stargate canon. It also suffered a very poor reception from fans of the franchise, and viewership was so low it was canceled after one season.

The show follows Gus Bonnar and his teams’ adventures after Bonnar is framed for opening a Stargate to a future version of Stargate Command. He and his team flee through the Stargate and cannot return until Bonnar can clear his name.

7 SGO Stargate Origins (3.9/10)

2018’s Stargate Origins, also known as SGO, was one series of 10 episodes, each 10-minutes long. It followed a young Catherine Langford, a keen student of the phenomena that would be later known on Earth as Stargates. When Catherine and her father find and investigate one such gate near Giza, they are captured by Nazis, who have been using the gate for their own nefarious purposes. Catherine escapes, but the Nazis take her father with them through the portal. Catherine then enlists the help of her close friends and they go on an adventure through the Stargate to rescue her father.

A 104-minute ‘feature cut’ of the 10 episodes was released later that same year, titled Stargate Origins: Catherine. As well as weaving the existing episodes together, it featured some new scenes, a new title sequence, and enhanced visual effects. This satisfied fans of the show, but the general reception of the series by fans and critics showed SGO didn’t live up to the Stargate name.

6 Stargate (7.1/10)

Stargate’s original form was, of course, the 1994 movie, written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, with the latter also directing the movie. The film stars James Spader and Kurt Russell and tells the story of a Stargate discovered in Egypt that leads to a far off planet populated by human beings resembling the ancient Egyptians. They worship the Egyptian God Ra, and the visitors are surprised to discover that Ra is a tangible being who is present and lording over the planet.

The movie also features the U.S. military and cogitates over what their foreign policy would be in such a situation, a plotline that’s been mimicked and parodied several times since with the likes of Avatar and South Park. The film made for a fun and memorable cinematic outing and became a huge hit with sci-fi nerds. It grossed $170 million worldwide and opened a portal to the fictional universe that spawned every entry in this list.

5 Stargate: The Ark Of Truth (7.4/10)

After SG-1 ended its run in 2007, two feature-length sequels to the show were made. Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum hit screens, just small screens though as both were direct-to-DVD. Even so, The Ark of Truth alone made over $13 million in DVD sales and rentals.

It follows the story of the crew of SG-1 and their quest for the titular Arc of Truth, a quest that gets Earth politically involved with the advanced Ori race and the anti-Ori resistance. The film didn’t blow any socks off, but it was good enough, and it was interesting to see what happened when you adapt from movie to TV then back to movie again.

4 Stargate: Continuum (7.5/10)

Stargate: Continuum was the second of the two SG-1 spin-off films released in 2008. This one, like Infinity before it, went to the time travel well to find a story, which can often be a dangerous game and sign of desperation in the world of sequels.

However, unlike SGI, they kept the synopsis simple: Ba’al – a member of the parasitic Goa’uld race – goes back in time and prevents the creation of the Stargate program; SG-1 have to restore their version of the present. But it failed to perform as well as The Ark of Truth, grossing a mere $8 million, but it only cost $7 million to make.

3 SGU Stargate Universe (7.6/10)

Stargate: Universe, also known as SGU, ran for 40 episodes from 2009-2011. It took place in the present and featured a whole new cast of colorful characters including Robert Carlyle as Dr. Nicholas Rush. While it failed to capture the imaginations of the fans the way Atlantis or particularly SG-1 did, it remains a solid addition to the franchise.

It had a darker tone and more depth of character than previous incarnations and followed the crew of ancient spaceship Destiny as they explored the cosmos billions of light-years from Earth, trying to find a way to return home. The second season ended on a cliffhanger, but the show was never renewed.

2 Stargate: Atlantis (8.1/10)

Stargate: Atlantis was one of the more memorable and successful spin-offs, and served as a launching pad for the then-unknown Jason Mamoa. It ran for 99 episodes from 2004-2009, keeping Stargate relevant as television and the sci-fi genre evolved and began to gather steam.

The show directly follows the events of the SG-1 season 7 finale “Lost City” and season 8 premiere “New Order,” where the crew of SG-1 discovers an Antarctic outpost created by an alien race known as The Ancients. In the Atlantis pilot, Dr. Daniel Jackson investigates this outpost, which leads to the discovery of the lost city of Atlantis, spawning a relatively long-lived TV show and a new angle on the Stargate lore.

1 Stargate SG-1 (8.4/10)

Stargate SG-1 was the first and by far the most successful Stargate spin-off. It ran for 213 episodes, from 1997 to 2007, and is still the most talked-about incarnation of the show. SG-1 takes place a year after the events of the 1994 movie, and serves as more of the same, expanding on all the fascinating ideas the movie implied but didn’t have time to explore.

It followed SG-1, a United States Air Force Special Operations team that was tasked with exploring the galaxy and defending the Earth from various alien threats and villains. Of all the many past and future Stargate spin-offs, SG-1 will always hold a special place in fans’ hearts for giving them exactly what they wanted: 150 more hours of the 1994 classic.
