Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner and producer who’s released several irreverent TV shows in the last two decades. From Nip/Tuck to American Horror Story, Murphy isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and frighten his audience, often including disturbing storylines in his work.

Murphy’s portfolio is quite diverse, from musicals to medial dramas to high school stories with horror and dismay. Here’s a list of every show Ryan Murphy has created, in order of IMDb rating, from lowest to highest.

10 Glee (6.7)

Surprisingly, one of Ryan Murphy’s most famous shows, Glee, takes the bottom spot on this list, rating a 6.7 on IMDb. While the cheerful singsong of the ensemble cast brightened the spirits of some, others weren’t as overjoyed, displayed by its lackluster ratings on the popular movie/TV database.

Glee ran for six seasons but dipped off in popularity after one of its main stars, Cory Montieth, passed away from a drug overdose during the fourth season.

9 The New Normal (6.8)

Ryan Murphy created the 2012 drama, The New Normal, with Ali Adler (Supergirl, Chuck) and Katherine Shaffer. It features both Andrew Rannells (Girls, The Book of Mormon) and NeNe Leakes (Real Housewives of Atlanta) and receives a 6.8 rating on IMDb. The series only lasted one season and didn’t gain much recognition or notoriety.

The New Normal centers a gay couple who hires a surrogate mother, but the plot and storylines seem a little too hair-brained for the average consumer to digest.

8 Scream Queens (7.1)

Murphy teamed up alongside his Glee co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan to invent the dark comedy Scream Queens, starring Emma Roberts (We’re The Millers, American Horror Story) and Lea Michele (Glee, The Mayor) who have both starred in other productions by Murphy and company. Jamie Lee Curtis also makes several appearances throughout Scream Queens.

7 Popular (7.3)

Created with Gina Matthews, Ryan Murphy first took off when he released Popular in 1999, which was a unique, tongue-in-cheek approach to explaining the woes and tribulations of high schoolers. It featured real-life scenarios mixed in with ridiculous musical numbers.

Although Popular only lasted for two seasons, its often featured amongst lists of cult classic TV shows.

6 The Politician (7.5)

Another production by the super-trio of Ian Brennan, Brad Flachuk, and Ryan Murphy, The Politician’s first season was released in 2019 and received high praise amongst critics. It stars Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect) as the protagonist Payton Hobart, who’s dreamt of being President of the United States since he was seven.

Also starring Zoey Dutch (Set It Up, Ringer), Bob Balaban (Gosford Park, Lady in the Water), and Gweneth Paltrow (Shallow Hal, Glee), The Politician is available to stream on Netflix.

5 Nip/Tuck (7.6)

When Ryan Murphy released Nip/Tuck in 2002, there wasn’t anything on air quite similar to the eerie, disturbing storylines Murphy created. Nip/Tuck features Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Christian Troy (Julian McMahon), two plastic surgeons in Miami who share not only a practice but a love interest in Julia (Joely Richardson), and possibly some of the same children.

With guest stars like Joan Rivers and Brittany Snow, Nip/Tuck promised to deliver unpredictable story arcs that pack quite the punch. The six-season series is available to stream on Hulu.

4 9-1-1 (7.7)

Murphy teamed up alongside Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear to create 9-1-1, a medical drama surrounding the heated moments of first responders. 9-1-1 stars Angela Bassett (Black Panther, American Horror Story) and Peter Krause (Six Feet Under, Parenthood) and receives a 7.7 on IMDb.

9-1-1 is currently in its fourth season and brought Angela Bassett an award for her performance in the series: an AAFCA Award for Best Performance.

3 American Horror Story (8.1)

The powerhouse duo of Brad Falchuk (husband of Gweneth Paltrow) and Ryan Murphy created the ever-so-popular anthology series American Horror Story, which rates an 8.1 on IMDb. American Horror Story features disturbing scenarios with a changing theme each season, with nine in the bag and the tenth to premiere in 2020. AHS has been contracted and signed on through season 13 with Fx.

American Horror Story has featured stars like Lady Gaga, Neil Patrick Harris, and Patti LaBelle. Evan Peters stars in almost every season, while Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates are featured in several seasons throughout the anthology series.

2 American Crime Story (8.4)

As an executive producer, Ryan Murphy had a say in some of the creative prospects of American Crime Story, a similar anthology series spinoff of American Horror Story, which happens to rate higher than its predecessor with an 8.4 on IMDb.

American Crime Story stars Sarah Paulson (12 Years A Slave, Glass), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, Black Panther). It also features David Schwimmer (Friends), Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), and John Travolta (Grease, Saturday Night Fever).

1 Pose (8.6)

Created by Steven Canals, Brad Falchuk, and Ryan Murphy, Pose takes place in 1987 New York amongst the literary and social scenes amongst cultural icons of the late ’80s. Pose boasts a whopping 8.6 rating on IMDb and has been nominated for three Golden Globes.

Staring MJ Rodriguez (Nurse Jackie), Dominique Jackson, and India Moore (Queen & Slim), Pose has been running since 2018, and season three sets to premiere in June of 2020.
