There are different Shiny hunting methods in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and it has grown to be a hobby for tons of Pokémon fans around the world. In the Pokémon series, every creature has its own ‘Shiny’ variation. There are no mechanical changes with these Pokémon, but they come with a new color design and feature; a special sparkle every time they come out of the Poké Ball. The thing that makes Shiny Pokémon so interesting is how incredibly rare they are to encounter, making the hunt very rewarding. It’s common for players to go through several entries in the series without encountering a single one. But, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl do offer different methods of hunting them down.
The basic odds of finding a Shiny Pokémon are 1/4096. This means for every encounter; the game spins a wheel that has a 1/4096 chance of landing on a Shiny. Although, there are different ways for players to increase these odds. Many of these methods were how Shiny Pokémon worked in Sword and Shield, showing more new mechanics appearing in this remake. To make it easier, players should do a handful of things before they begin Shiny Hunting.
Before Shining Hunting in Diamond or Pearl, players should get the Shiny Charm item. This item can be obtained after the player has captured all 149 Pokémon in the game. After doing this, head to the Hotel Grand Lake and speak with an NPC to get the Shiny Charm. This will bring the odds from 1/2096 to 1/1365, which is already significantly better. Now, players can begin Shiny Hunting:
How To Shiny Hunt in Pokémon BDSP
- International Breeding: If a Pokémon breeds with a Pokémon from another real-world country, the offspring has an improved chance of being Shiny. It might take a while, but it is possible to breed Shiny Pokémon in BDSP. Players can breed their Pokémon by placing two compatible Pokémon in the Day Care Center. After a few seconds have passed, the two Pokémon will give players an Egg that can be hatched by walking around. If one of the parents is from another region, the baby has a 1/683 chance of being Shiny without the Shiny Charm and a 1/512 chance with the Shiny Charm. Typically, players aim to find an International Ditto since it can breed with almost any Pokémon.
- Random Encounters: There is a chance for players to find a Shiny Pokémon through wild encounters. This one is pretty difficult since players will have no control of what can happen in battle. Although, players looking to capture a Shiny Pokémon in the early game like Bidoof or Starly can use this method.
- Soft Reset: This is a method where players will reset the game until they find a Shiny Pokémon. This method is typically used for Pokémon that have interactive encounters like the starter Pokémon, a handful of legendaries, and finding and catching Drifloon. For this, save the game before interacting with the Pokémon, check if it’s Shiny, and reset the game to repeat the process. Again, make sure to turn off autosave to save time.
- The Underground: Players will access this location after reaching Veilstone City. Here, players can explore a variety of caverns, find items, and discover Pokémon dens. While exploring, players may come across a Diglett or Dugtrio. Collecting 40 of them will reward players 4 minutes of improved Shiny Odds. The chances of finding a Shiny Pokémon increase by half for players who don’t have the Shiny Charm. Players can also play with friends to collect more Digletts faster.
- The Poké Radar: This is an item that players can unlock after receiving the National Pokédex. This item allows players to search for Pokémon and create a chain of encounters. When building a chain of the same Pokémon species, the Shiny Odds will begin to increase. For example, after chaining about 40 Pokémon of the same species, the chance of finding a Shiny Pokémon will be increased to 1/99. This is the fastest way to get a Shiny Pokémon.
Overall, Shiny Hunting will require a ton of patience by the player. The best thing to do would be to passively play the game while doing something else in the background, like listening to a podcast. Shiny Hunting in BDSP can take players a few seconds to several years, depending on the odds.
