Every Shiny Pokémon You Can Hunt But Cant Catch

Shiny hunting in the mainline Pokémon games takes a lot of patience and determination, as it can often take hours, days, or even weeks to catch a single Shiny Pokémon. However, there are some Pokémon that trainers choose to hunt that can’t be caught. These uncatchable Shiny Pokémon are few in number, but there are some trainers out there who are crazy enough to hunt them knowing they will walk away empty-handed.

The reason Shiny hunting can take such a long time is due to the low odds of finding one. In the first five generations of Pokémon, the odds of a Pokémon appearing Shiny were 1/8192. Since the change in Gen 6, the odds have been raised to 1/4096. This means that every time a Pokémon appears it has a 1 in 4096 chance of being Shiny regardless of the number of encounters. These odds have caused some hunters to spend months on a single hunt reaching 70,000+ encounters. There are methods players can use to raise their odds further, but most uncatchable Pokémon fall outside the realm of these methods.

Despite the ridiculous number of hours people put into finding shiny Pokémon, there are still some players who choose to spend that same amount of time hunting different colored Pokémon they can’t even catch. There is also an entire week dedicated to these uncatchable Pokémon where players will hunt them and walk away from the event with nothing but memories. If players are looking for their next uncatchable hunt, here’s every Shiny Pokémon they can hunt but can’t catch.

FireRed & LeafGreen Uncatchable Shiny Pokémon

Every Shiny Pokémon You Can Hunt But Cant Catch

Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen are the 2004 remakes of the original 1996 Pokémon games, and they only have a couple of uncatchable shiny Pokémon. The first is an uncatchable Weedle that appears while the Old Man is teaching the player how to catch Pokémon. This Weedle can appear Shiny, but can only be caught by the Old Man. After he teaches the player he will give them the Teachy TV, which is a small television that comes preloaded with tutorials. The man on the television can also teach players how to catch Pokémon, and during this tutorial, he has the chance to encounter a Shiny Weedle. Again, the broadcaster can catch the Shiny Weedle while the player stands idly by.

The only other uncatchable Shiny Pokémon in FireRed & LeafGreen is Marowak’s ghost, which appears in Lavender Town’s Pokémon Tower. An unidentified ghost will block the player’s path to the roof and has to be identified with a Silph Scope. The Marowak won’t appear Shiny until after the mirage has dissipated, and it also won’t have the traditional Shiny sparkles. Since this Pokémon is a ghost the player will not be able to catch it, but will have to kill it instead.

Pokémon Crystal Uncatchable Shinies

There is only one section in Pokémon Crystal that has uncatchable Shiny Pokémon, and it is Route 29 at the start of the game. This is because players are required to travel from New Bark Town to Cherrygrove City before they obtain any Poké Balls. This means that any Pokémon encountered on Route 29 cannot be caught until after the player has progressed the story to the point where they access Poké Balls. Route 29 Pokémon include Pidgey, Sentret, Rattata, Hoppip, and Hoothoot, all of which can appear Shiny.

Ruby, Sapphire, & Emerald Uncatchable Shiny Pokémon

These three titles have a large number of uncatchable Shinies, some of which are exclusive to certain games. The first is the Poocheyena that attacks Professor Birch at the very start of the player’s adventure. This appears right after they select their starter Pokémon, making it a perfect hunt for players who also want to hunt something catchable simultaneously. This Poocheyena is meant to be killed by the player, meaning there is no way to catch it.

The next uncatchable Shiny Pokémon can be hunted during the catching tutorial. Both the Ralts that Wally is attempting to catch, and Norman’s Zigzagoon that he uses during the battle, can appear Shiny. Wally will catch the Ralts and use it later in the game, and it can even retain its Shiny form.

The Battle Pike and Battle Pyramid are two locations exclusive to Pokémon Emerald where players can fight high-level Pokémon and trainers. There is a large variety of wild Pokémon that can appear at these locations, all of which can appear Shiny, but none can be caught. This area is great for players who want to rack up a large number of encounters towards a Shiny Pokémon they can’t catch.

The Battle Factory in Pokémon Emerald is a great uncatchable Shiny hunt for players who wants to hold a Shiny Pokémon for a moment. This location allows players to rent teams of three random Pokémon, and each one has a chance to appear Shiny. While the player can’t take the Pokémon home with them once they leave the Factory, they can at least use them in battle for a little while.

Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum Uncatchable Shiny Pokémon

Similar to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the Starly that attacks the player at the beginning of Diamond & Pearl can appear Shiny. Since it is a part of the game’s tutorial and the player does not have Poké Balls, this Shiny bird can’t be caught. However, players can hunt Shiny starter Pokémon while hunting the uncatchable Starly.

Similar to Emerald’s Battle Factory, Pokémon Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver have a location called the Battle Frontier. Instead of the player’s rental Pokémon appearing Shiny, however, its the NPC’s Pokémon who have a chance to appear Shiny.

Black/White & Black2/White2 Uncatchable Shiny Pokémon

These games feature a unique hunt in which the professor’s Pokémon that appears in the game’s intro sequence can appear Shiny. The majority of Pokémon titles have a similar intro where the professor tosses out a Pokémon, but BW/B2W2’s are the only ones that can appear Shiny. In Black & White, Professor Juniper tosses out a Minccino, and in Black2/White2 it is a Cinccino. The only other uncatchable Shiny is during the catching tutorial in Black 2 & White 2. Bianca shows the trainer how to catch a Purloin which can appear Shiny, just like Wally’s Ralts from Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Pokémon X & Y Uncatachable Shinies

The only uncatchable Shiny Pokémon in X & Y are a part of the catching tutorial. Just like Wally’s encounter in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the Fletchling the players’ rival uses in battle and the Bunnelby they catch can appear Shiny.

Sword & Shield Uncatchable Shinies

Pokémon Sword & Shield only have one method of encountering uncatchable Shinies that pales in comparison to other methods. In the Isle of Armor DLC, players have the ability to pay NPC’s around the map to show them the Pokédex entry for a Pokémon they haven’t encountered yet. This entry has the chance of displaying the Pokémon’s Shiny form instead of its regular Pokédex entry.

Pokémon Colosseum Uncatchable Shinies

Pokémon Colosseum has a lot of uncatchable Shiny Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon can appear Shiny in battle only during rematches with that trainer. The Pokémon can’t be caught because it is a rematch, however, there is one exception. The trainer who has the Hitmontop uses it in a battle before fighting the player, meaning the Shiny lock has been removed. This means it has the chance to appear Shiny in battle but can also be caught by the player. Yet, the Pokémon’s Shininess is still determined after it’s been caught, meaning the Shiny Hitmontop that appears in battle is only semi-uncatchable.

Those are all the uncatchable Pokémon that can appear Shiny. Players should hunt these at their own risk as they are no easier to find than catchable Shiny Pokémon, and the player may feel a sense of disappointment at the end of the hunt. That’s not to say these hunts can’t be fun, and these rare encounters are celebrated by the community. Although, it’s much more rewarding to hunt Pokémon that can actually be caught.
