Every Time Godzilla Fought Mechagodzilla (& Who Won In Each Movie)

Godzilla and Mechagodzilla have fought each other five times, with the potential of a sixth clash coming soon. Godzilla vs. Kong will mark Mechagodzilla’s MonsterVerse debut (according to toy leaks that spoiled Mechagodzilla being in Godzilla vs. Kong) and his first live-action collision with the King of the Monsters in 17 years. Mechagodzilla hasn’t fought Godzilla as often as King Ghidorah, but even so, Mechagodzilla is without a doubt Godzilla’s second biggest enemy in Toho’s movies.

Directed by Adam Wingard and set for a November 2020 release, Godzilla vs. Kong will pit the two pop culture icons against each other for the first time since 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. Though the upcoming film is confirmed to have a definitive winner, a team-up between Godzilla and Kong is expected, given the inclusion of Mechagodzilla, who was quietly set up in the credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Mechagodzilla, who may have been constructed by Monarch, may force Godzilla and Kong to put aside their differences and work together to defeat their common adversary.

What will happen when Legendary’s Godzilla clashes with Mechagodzilla? The answer to this question is unclear, but his past showdowns with his robotic counterpart could shed some light on what might occur when the two come to blows in the highly anticipated fourth installment in the MonsterVerse. Here’s what happened in all five live-action meetings between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

Every Time Godzilla Fought Mechagodzilla (& Who Won In Each Movie)

Mechagodzilla made his first appearance as the titular antagonist in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Created by aliens for the purpose of conquering the planet, Mechagodzilla was originally disguised as the real Godzilla. While brutally beating Godzilla’s most faithful ally, Anguirus, it was revealed that Mechagodzilla was an imposter, a discovery that Godzilla made on his own in their first fight. After seeing the metal underneath his skin, Godzilla blasts away the disguise with his atomic breath.

Fighting Mechagodzilla proves to be an interesting challenge for Godzilla. Mechagodzilla’s arsenal of missiles and eye lasers do considerable damage to Godzilla, including a grave neck wound. Godzilla makes an alliance with King Caesar, a lion-like kaiju and guardian deity who the human characters of the movie spent most of their time trying to summon. Due to Godzilla and King Caesar’s teamwork, Mechagodzilla is put on the defensive. When Mechagodzilla tries to escape, Godzilla suddenly demonstrates magnetic powers and draws Mechagodzilla toward him. After using his new abilities to narrow the distance, Godzilla rips off Mechagodzilla’s head, and the threat that he poses to the world is brought to an end.

Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

Every Time Godzilla Fought Mechagodzilla (& Who Won In Each Movie)

A direct sequel to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla followed in 1975. Titled Terror of Mechagodzilla, the movie resurrects the character by having him rebuilt as Mechagodzilla 2, a new and improved version of Godzilla’s metallic nemesis. A new group of aliens allies with a human scientist to defeat Godzilla and take over the planet, but they decided that they would need not one, but two giant monsters to carry out their plan. They manage to find a peaceful, aquatic kaiju called Titanosaurus and place him under their control. Godzilla defeats Titanosaurus alone, but is given some trouble when Titanosaurus and Mechagodzilla form an alliance, thus flipping the formula for the final fight of the last movie. Instead of Godzilla and another kaiju teaming up against Mechagodzilla, it’s Mechagodzilla and a third monster teaming up against Godzilla. Godzilla is overwhelmed and defeated. After being buried by the two of them, it looks as if all hope is lost.

After Titanosaurus is distracted by the humans, Godzilla emerges and begins hammering Mechagodzilla. In close combat, Mechagodzilla is unable to rely on his missiles and is viciously beaten by an angry and reinvigorated Godzilla. Mechagodzilla does get in a few hits, but is taken down by Godzilla, who destroys him with his atomic breath. With Mechagodzilla out of the way, Godzilla moves on Titanosaurus, and defeats him as well. This time around, Mechagodzilla was still a tremendous threat to Godzilla, but despite being more powerful than the previous version and having an ally, he wasn’t any more fortunate than his predecessor.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)

Every Time Godzilla Fought Mechagodzilla (& Who Won In Each Movie)

The 1990s Godzilla movies move away from the days where Godzilla was treated as a hero who defended Tokyo from monsters like King Ghidorah and Gigan. Now, Godzilla is seen as a menace that the world must deal with for its own safety. This time, it’s humanity who build Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla is sent to defeat Godzilla, but fails. After being fixed up, Mechagodzilla is caught in a conflict with both Godzilla and Rodan, who are searching for Godzilla’s son.

Knowing that Mechagodzilla – even with all his weapons isn’t powerful enough to defeat Godzilla fairly – a plan is put in place to assure Mechagodzilla’s victory. The Japanese have discovered that Godzilla has two brains, and install a weapon that will allow Mechagodzilla to penetrate the second brain. An electrified harpoon does the trick, and Godzilla is paralyzed. Rodan, believing that Godzilla is the only one who can save the baby Godzilla, gives his life force to Godzilla. Godzilla, strengthened by Rodan’s sacrifice, renews his attack on Mechagodzilla. Thanks to Rodan, Godzilla gains a new heat ray that allows him to easily melt away at Mechagodzilla’s armor. This proves to be Mechagodzilla’s downfall.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2001)

Every Time Godzilla Fought Mechagodzilla (& Who Won In Each Movie)

In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla is known by the name “Kiryu”, and is once again utilized as a force for the Japanese government. Created using the skeleton of the 1954 Godzilla, Kiryu is operated by humans and is regarded throughout the film as a heroic figure who everyone believes will save Japan from destruction. This version of Mechagodzilla matches Godzilla blow for blow, and his new laser canon, the Absolute Zero Canon, make him incredibly dangerous to Godzilla. However, Godzilla’s atomic breath is just as catastrophic to Kiryu. He’s damaged so badly that the movie’s human protagonist has to get inside Kiryu and control him directly. The fight ends in a draw, with both monsters sustaining numerous injuries. But since Godzilla is forced into a retreat, Japan sees the outcome as a victory for Kiryu.

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)

Their latest big screen match-up between the two occurred in Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., the sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Following their last fight, the government repaired and upgraded Kiryu, and sent him to help Mothra battle Godzilla. Even with Mothra on his side, Kiryu’s armor wasn’t able to hold up against Godzilla’s atomic breath. Both Kiryu and Mothra were defeated.

The rematch at the end of the movie has a much a different result. Once again joined by Mothra, Kiryu struggles to contend with Godzilla. Mothra dies in the battle, but Kiryu is able to stab Godzilla in the chest with a drill. Mothra’s children wrap up Godzilla in silk, allowing Kiryu to fly him over the ocean and drop him into the water. Though not a fair fight to say the least, Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. gives Mechagodzilla his second win over the King of the Monsters. Godzilla has won the most fights, and it remains to be seen if that will remain true following the release of Godzilla vs. Kong.
