Every Way Will Has Fantasized About Killing Hannibal On The Show

During Hannibal season 2, Will twice daydreamed about artful execution methods for the formidable serial killer. Inspired by author Thomas Harris’s Hannibal series of novels, Bryan Fuller created the show to explore the complicated relationship between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and his patient, FBI special investigator Will Graham. The series stars Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen as Will and Hannibal, respectively. While the NBC show was canceled after its third season due to low ratings, the actors – and the series – received acclaim and in the years since Hannibal has continued to gather more fans since the season 3 finale.

Will and Lecter had a complicated relationship throughout the series – to say the least. Before Will fantasizes about murdering him, Lecter first attempts to kill Will in Hannibal season 1, and the serial killer tries to take Will’s life several more times before the two plunge off a cliff together in the show’s finale. From the beginning, the two formed a strange bond that even they are unable to fully comprehend. One that drives them both to extremes, from love to hate and back again, as they attempt to take the other’s life multiple times.

At the end of Hannibal season 1, Will tries to kill Lecter after discovering the truth about his brilliant psychiatrist’s murderous ways. When that doesn’t work, both Will and Lecter take turns sending other killers after one another. Finally, when both men are left still standing at the end of the back-to-back murder attempts, Will and Hannibal resolve to end the charade, agreeing to a truce in Hannibal season 2. But that doesn’t keep Will from fantasizing about Lecter’s demise. In fact, the first time Will imagines killing Hannibal is in the opening scene of “Shizakana.”

Will is awoken by a dream in which Hannibal is tied to a tree as a stag pulls a rope wrapped around his neck, slowly strangling him to death – an ode to a similar kill in the Hannibal Rising movie. The next time Will daydreams of Lector’s death is in Hannibal’s season 2 episode 12, “Tome-wan.” It’s during a session with Dr. Lector that Will alludes to the fantasy when he mentions the “snare around Hannibal’s neck” in an attempt to unnerve the doctor. Will wants Hannibal to know he still wishes him dead, almost as if daring him to do something about it. This is when Will, on the advice of Mad Mikkelsen’s cannibal Lector himself, imagines how he might kill his psychiatrist a second time. In this scenario, Will visualizes himself slitting Hannibal’s throat as he hangs from a noose.

In the end, neither Will nor Hannibal succeeds at taking the others’ life and deep down, that’s probably because they don’t really want to see each other dead. As has been thoroughly discussed by fans and Hannibal creator, Bryan Fuller, Will and Lector do care deeply for – and perhaps even love each other in their own twisted way. By Hannibal’s season 3 finale, Will and Lector come together to take down Francis Dolarhyde. This mission brings the two together, and the audience is left with the understanding they’ve started a new phase of their relationship. One Fuller has assured hopeful fans they will eventually get to see played out at some point in the future.
