Who’s in the Marvel series Armor Wars, and what’s it all about? At Disney Investor Day 2020, numerous upcoming Disney+ shows were announced, including Ironheart and Secret Invasion. As part of the MCU’s Phase 4, Armor Wars centers on the veteran MCU character Colonel Rhodey Rhodes, otherwise known as War Machine.
In Marvel Comics, “Armor Wars” is part of a seven-issue storyline from Iron Man #225-#232. Originally published between December 1987 and June 1988, the narrative focuses predominantly on Tony Stark and villains who attempt to steal his technology. Iron Man identifies the usual suspects, and subsequently enlists Scott Lang and Colonel Rhodes for assistance. The “Stark Wars” narrative culminates with a battle between Iron Man and Firepower, with War Machine supporting Tony Stark along the way.
The Iron Man premise in the “Armor Wars” comic storyline naturally raises questions about the Disney+ adaptation, most notably in terms of the cast and general plot. However, Part One of the comics narrative does indeed allow for a solid understanding of how Kevin Feige may approach the MCU adaptation, and who will be involved. Here’s everything we know about Armor Wars on Disney+ so far.
Armor Wars Release Date Info
Marvel hasn’t announced an official release date for Armor Wars. As previously noted, the Disney+ series will be part of MCU Phase 4, so it will presumably premiere sometime in 2021 or 2022.
Armor Wars Story Details
With Iron Man out of the picture, Armor Wars will focus on War Machine’s quest to prevent the theft of Stark technology. The character has appeared in several MCU movies, and was last seen at Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame. So, what does the focus on War Machine mean for the broader Disney+ storyline? For one, it opens the door for a guest appearance from Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, who plays a role in the original comics storyline. From there, it remain unclear which baddies will be featured.
In Marvel Comics’ “Stark Wars,” Tony keeps his eyes on Beetle, Controller, the Crimson Dynamo, Doctor Doom, Mauler, Professor Power, Shockwave, Stilt-Man, Titanium Man, and the Raiders, to name a few. In the MCU’s Phase 4, don’t be surprised if War Machine recruits Iron Man’s teenage protege Riri Williams, who will be the central focus of the new Disney+ series Ironheart.
Armor Wars’ MCU Connections
Armor Wars thematically connects to War Machine’s friendship with Iron Man in the MCU, however it specifically links to the Iron Man 2 character Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). In the comics storyline, Hammer is responsible for having Spymaster steal Stark technology. During Iron Man 2, however, he’s tasked by the government with building the War Machine armor, but later teams up with Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) and unsuccessfully attempts to recreate the Arc Reactor. For Hammer to make an appearance in Armor Wars, he would presumably have been released (or escaped from) Seagate Penitentiary after being arrested.
Armor Wars Cast
As of December 2020, only Don Cheadle has been cast in Armor Wars on Disney+. He’ll reprise his on-going MCU role as Colonel James Rhodes, and will undoubtedly rely on intel and assistance from his surviving allies in The Avengers.
Beyond the MCU, Cheadle is best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in Hotel Rwanda, along with other roles in films such as Boogie Nights, Traffic, and Crash. Cheadle currently stars as Mo Monroe in the Showtime series Black Monday.
