Everything We Know About Stray

Stray, a new game being developed for PlayStation 5, was announced at Sony’s Future of Gaming reveal event on June 11th. The game is being developed by Blue Twelve and is published by Annapurna Interactive, but the title has actually been in the works since 2015 when only two people were working on it.

Stray was but one of over 25 games announced at Sony’s recent PS5 reveal event. The developers showed players a short trailer which, while not revealing very many details about what Stray’s gameplay could be, did still give viewers some insight into the game’s crisp graphics and intriguing storyline, and some players have already begun developing theories about just what exactly Stray will be like.

Many details may still be unclear about Stray, but by examining the game’s trailer as well as its official press release there are a number of things which are known and can be surmised. Stray’s trailer features high-definition cats, sci-fi ascetics, and a number of signs which point to humans being completely absent from the game.

Stray Gameplay & Story

Everything We Know About Stray

In Stray, players will assume the role of a clever cat who is responsible for solving mysteries amid a futuristic setting. Players will be joined by B12, a robot companion who never leaves the cat’s side. The main plot of Stray’s story will have the pair attempt to solve an age-old mystery in the heart of the forgotten cyber city, which has a distinctly post-apocalyptic feel. The graphics in the trailer are alone stunning, as viewers are introduced to a neon-lit, futuristic city, which appears to take direct inspiration from Japan’s bustling downtown. Humans have seemingly been obliterated from the city – graffiti reading “RIP Humans” is visible – leaving the animals to fend for themselves against the wide variety of robots posing a threat to their well-being. It appears droids have completely taken over the city, as they can be seen doing everyday activities and tasks, such as dining at a restaurant and gossiping with friends.

It’s unclear which or if all the robots pose a threat to the feline protagonist during Stray’s gameplay, but a press release issued by Annapurna Interactive warns that the city isn’t as welcoming as it may initially seem. “Players will play as a stray cat, roaming surroundings high and low, defend against unforeseen threats and solve the mysteries of this unwelcoming place inhabited by nothing but unassuming droids and dangerous creatures,” the press release explains “Lost, alone and separated from family, players must untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten cybercity and find the way home.”

Stray’s Release Date

Considering Stray was only announced on June 11th, it’s not surprising that there are very few details available about the cat-friendly game. However, it has been confirmed that Stray’s release date is sometime in 2021. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to release later this year in time for the holidays, so gamers will still have to wait at least a few months after their debut before Stray becomes available. There is currently no word on whether the game will be backwards compatible with earlier consoles, such as the PlayStation 4, but as Sony has promised to have several more reveal events during the summer months, more details will likely become known about Stray’s gameplay and story soon, and players will have a better idea about what they can expect from the game.

Stray is one of the new titles announced for the PlayStation 5, and even though gamers will have to wait a while before it’s available, it appears it will be well worth the wait.
