Mortal Kombat is finally returning to the big screen this year with a new live-action film directed by Simon McQuoid from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callahan, and produced by James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman). The film will feature an ensemble cast of star actors and martial artists portraying the eclectic collection of fighters from the popular video game series. The movie is only a few months out from releasing, and there are plenty of details and theories for fans pour over while they wait.

Mortal Kombat was first adapted into a live-action movie with Paul Anderson’s 1995 film of the same name, which remains one of the more positively-received video game movies to date. The film was campy and low-budget, but it was a fun ride with engaging fights that stayed true to the spirit of the franchise. The sequel, 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, undid a lot of that goodwill, however. The second entry released to widespread criticism and disappointment from fans, keeping the series outside of theaters until now.

The early looks and story details for McQuoid’s film are promising, and the narrative focus seems to be in the right place. However, video game fans have been burned many times before with movie adaptations, so there’s no telling how the new version will actual play out until its release. Here’s everything to know so far about the new Mortal Kombat movie.

Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Release Date

Everything We Know About The Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot

Mortal Kombat is set to release on April 16, 2021. It will be available for streaming on HBO Max at the same time it premieres in theaters, in keeping with the Warner Bros. day-and-date streaming plan for all their major cinematic releases in 2021. That will put it out 24 years after Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which hopefully is enough time to undo the bad will and deliver a new, satisfying entry for fans.

Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Cast

Everything We Know About The Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot

Mortal Kombat will star Lewis Tan (Wu Assassins, Into the Badlands) as Cole Young, a brand new addition to the MK universe. Tan will lead an ensemble cast of characters from the video games, including Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung lao (Max Huang), and Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks) and Shang Tsung (Chin Han). Many of the film’s stars are prolific martial artists, which should bode well for the fight scenes to come. Johnny Cage is the most notable absence from the announced cast, being the only fighter from the original Mortal Kombat arcade game to not have a confirmed role in the film.

Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Story Details

The core beats of Mortal Kombat seem to be staying true to the spirit of the games. The Mortal Kombat tournament is a fighting competition between different realms, most notably Earthrealm and Outworld. Outworld wants to win so that it may gain the power to conquer Earth, while the warriors of Earthrealm – led by Lord Raiden – fight to keep the invaders at bay.

So far, a few key changes have been announced, such as Kano training with Raiden and potentially fighting for the good guys, Shang Tsung being the Emperor of Outworld rather than serving the actual Emperor Shao Kahn, and Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s rivalry originating in feudal Japan, rather than the present day. The other most obvious addition is MMA fighter Cole Young himself, a new character to the franchise who finds Raiden and begins to train after being targeted by Sub-Zero – now apparently a resurrected agent of Shang Tsung. What’s more, Cole will be searching for Sonya Blade and will be unaware of his heritage, though the official synopsis for the film hints that Cole will, of course, unlock the immense power from within. While it’s unclear exactly why he’s being hunted by Sub-Zero, Cole has a distinct dragon marking he was born with and there is plenty to indicate that Cole is much more than what he seems.

Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Trailer

The official trailer offers fans a first look at what to expect from Mortal Kombat. Obviously, the film has a lot of action and hand-to-hand combat. Tan’s Cole is seen throughout the trailer, which is nail-bitingly thrilling. Prior to the trailer, a tiny bit of footage was released in HBO Max’s advertising for their upcoming year of content, which briefly showed Sub-Zero using his ice powers. Considering what was shown in the official red band trailer, which can be watched above, fans of Mortal Kombat have a lot to look forward to.
