2019’s Escape Room proved to be a surprise hit at the box office, and sequel Escape Room 2 is on its way to play more games with viewers in 2022. While its premise was fairly creative, it’s fair to say that not many people anticipated how much of a success Escape Room would end up being. Horror fans were especially skeptical of the film, mainly due to worries that its PG-13 rating would hold Escape Room back from delivering the gory carnage offered by past horror efforts about escaping traps like Saw and Cube.

While those concerns were somewhat borne out, Escape Room still turned out to be an entertaining time at the movies, albeit possibly a little long for its own good at 100 minutes. Thankfully, the titular rooms were marvels of production design and construction, leading to tense, visually stimulating sequences in which characters raced against the clock to try and solve various puzzles before one or more of them ended up dead.

Escape Room ended with a clear setup for a potential sequel, and after earning over $150 million on a $9 million budget, Sony was happy to greenlight one. Escape Room 2 is planned to arrive in 2022 after pandemic-related delays pushed the film further out than originally planned. Escape Room 2 Release Date

On February 25, 2019, less than two months after Escape Room’s theatrical release, Sony announced that Escape Room 2 was on the way, with director Adam Robitel and co-writers Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik all returning for a second outing. The film was initially slated the film for April 17, 2020. However, the pandemic delayed the film, which faced a number of changing release dates. Sony initially delayed the sequel to August 14 then again to December 30, 2020. The studio seemed to settle on a release date of January 1, 2021. Unfortunately, that theatrical release didn’t pan out, either. As of this writing, Escape Room 2 is scheduled to hit theaters January 7, 2022, nearly two years after it was originally supposed to drop.

Naturally, surviving characters Zoey Davis (Taylor Russell) and Ben Miller (Logan Miller) are both coming back for Escape Room 2. Also joining the cast of the sequel in so far undisclosed roles are Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan), Holland Roden (Channel Zero), Thomas Cocquerel (Billionaire Boys Club), Indya Moore (Pose), and Carlito Olivero (Bad Samaritan). Considering Deborah Ann Woll and Tyler Labine’s characters died in the first film, it’s highly doubtful they will be back for a second go-around. RIP.

Escape Room 2 Story

Sony has yet to reveal a single plot detail for Escape Room 2, choosing to keep the sequel’s story and characters close to the vest. As mentioned above though, the first Escape Room ended on an obvious sequel hook, with Zoey and Ben heading to New York City to further investigate the mysterious forces behind the game. It was clear the game’s puzzle master wasn’t finished with them either, and one presumes the sequel will pick up right from where the first film concluded. With Minos creating a new game that sets the survival rate at only 4%, Zoey and Ben are likely in for a devastating and dangerous journey. This is especially true now that it’s been revealed that a mysterious figure clearly wants both characters dead. Do they know too much? Probably. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a little while longer to find out what happens.
