Ju-On, or The Grudge, is one of the scariest and most influential horror movies ever made. The Japanese horror movie was a cultural phenomenon that went to inspire several remakes around the world. The film was one of the most influential horror movies of recent times and has truly inspired countless movies in the horror genre, and helped to introduce the world to the fantastic quality in Japanese horror movies (as well as some terrible English language remakes). That being said, there are some who believe that The Grudge is based on true events, if true this would make the film far more terrifying.

8 The Grudge Story

For those who are unaware, The Grudge is about the legend that if a person is murdered as a result of jealous rage, it leads to a curse. The curse is then reborn and passed on through each victim, growing and expanding with potentially endless possibilities. In the case of The Grudge, a husband discovers that his wife has been cheating on him and then viciously and brutally murders her before then killing his own son, Toshio.

As a result of the curse, the wife then returns as a vengeful spirit and anyone who comes into contact with the spirit is doomed to die.

7 The Case For Truth

It is no surprise that the movie is heavily inspired by Japanese legends and folk tales. The Grudge is based on the urban legend of Kayoko. The story of the legend and the movie is almost identical. In the legend, Kayako had a husband and a son, considering both to be her reason to continue living.

One day, however, her husband discovers his wife’s diary and, believing it showed evidence of her infidelity, murders her in a fit of rage. He stabbed his wife and crushed her windpipe, leaving her unable to speak. After the murder of his wife, the husband then killed his own son. Kayako would then return after death in order to exact revenge on the world for the evil she had endured.

There is no doubt that this Japanese legend is a horrifying and traumatic tale. It is a brutal story that has themes of male dominance and the sickening idea that a wife is the property of her husband. In addition, the story is also grounded in an idea that could indeed be true. It does not transcend the realms of possibility that a jealous husband may decide to murder his wife in a fit of misogynist rage.

However, just because the story appears to be a case that could be rooted in the real world it doesn’t necessarily follow that the tale of Kayako did actually occur.

5 Was There A Real Case Of Kayako

Despite the fact that the murder of Kayako is one that is steeped in realism, there is very little evidence to suggest that the urban legend is based on any true events. There is no evidence that a woman named Kayako was ever murdered in a jealous rage and certainly no evidence that her spirit returned to the world of the living due to a curse.

Rather, the story of Kayako is simply a Japanese urban legend that inspired the terrifying Grudge movie.

The reason why so many people believe that the Grudge is based on a true story is the power of the urban legend. This type of story is so grounded in reality and recited by so many people that it becomes believable, despite the fact that it never actually happened.

3 Onryō

Despite the fact that there was almost certainly no true or factual event that inspired The Grudge, there are several kinds of ghosts in Japanese folklore that did have an influence. Perhaps the clearest example is the Onryō.

The Onryō is a vengeful spirit in Japanese folklore that is able to inflict damage on the world of the living in order to exact revenge for the wrongs it experienced in its prior life. Perhaps one of the most famous cases of an Onryō spirit is concerned with a samurai’s broken promise. In this folktale, a samurai makes a promise to his dying wife that he will never remarry. The spirit of the dead wife then returned to the world of the living and beheaded the samurai’s new bride.

2 Kuchisake-onna

While not a direct inspiration for The Grudge, another Japanese urban legend that would have at least been a direct influence on the filmmakers is the legend of the Kuchisake-onna, or slit mouthed woman. This ghost is the spirit of a woman who has been mutilated by her husband and typically wears a mask to cover her face.

According to the legend, she is said to ask victims if she is pretty. If the victim says no, she kills them; if the victim says yes, she removes her mask to reveal her mutilated face. She asks, again, if she is pretty. If the victim says no, she kills them; if the victim says yes, she mutilates them too.

This urban legend became so believable in Japan that children were begging to be escorted home by teachers and other support staff, terrified that the slit mouthed woman would come for them.

Despite the fact that there is no empirical evidence that such a story occurred or that such a curse exists, there is certainly an influence on the filmmakers from Japanese urban legends and folk tales. The tale of Kayako is one that is steeped in the supernatural and vengeful.

There are several tales of spirits, not only in Japan, but throughout Asia who are brought back to Earth after an unfair death in order to enact their revenge. We can clearly see that The Grudge is based on several Japanese legends that are almost as terrifying as the actual movie.
