Warning: The Magic Order is a MATURE comic
As if appearing out of thin air, Mark Millar’s The Magic Order is back for another run of whimsical/violent adventures featuring the dysfunctional Moonstone family. A supernatural action/horror yarn following the trials and tribulations of a modern-day clan of magicians dedicated to protecting the world from black magic, the first series saw Millar’s stellar world-building and dialogue anchoring a rip-roaring ride through familial civil war, and according to the man himself, that was only the beginning.
Published by Image Comics in 2018-2019, The Magic Order is a grim and gritty mash-up of The Sopranos meets Harry Potter, with a dash of Shakespearian theater. The comic focuses on a family of dysfunctional wizards with powerful abilities. While the first series dealt with a dispute among the members of the family, leading to the ascension of black sheep-turned Order leader Cordelia Moonstone, this sequel will follow The Order’s battle with a cadre of dark wizards who have grown increasingly irate over The Order’s quashing of old threats to humanity.
While his bibliography includes some of the most influential runs and original creations in comics of the 21st Century, including Wanted, Kick-Ass, The Ultimates, Old Man Logan, and Civil War, Millar claims “The Magic Order stands out for me as my own personal favourite,” saying the sleek, yet heartfelt and analytical take on the inherent heroism of family and duty “just eclipses everything else on my shelves and I’ve loved working on it.” He sets up the series in characteristically conjuring fashion:
The idea is that the reason we’ve never seen a ghost is because there’s a secret society of wizards keeping the world safe. By day they do blue-collar jobs and walk among us. By night they hold back the darkness that used to rule the world. All those old monster movies we saw as kids were true, but these guys beat everything back for the age of reason and now we sleep safely in our beds. The sequel to our first series picks up where this left off as the agents of darkness start talking in the shadows, eager to overthrow the wizards and return the world to the chaos we had before.
Taking over art duties from Oliver Copiel will be Stuart Immonen (Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers), whom Millar described as “an absolute legend,” adding that the series was “a real beaut.”
Millar also shared new art ahead of the future Netflix adaptation of The Magic Order, featuring a new character named Kevin Mitchell, this time drawn by Ozgur Yildirim, whom Millar said was “going to be a massive character when we do the Netflix show.”
Since its debut, Millar’s madcap world of monsters, sex, and violence has carried with it a certain sense of storytelling joy, one which Millar has spent his career refining with free reign across countless fantastical worlds he’s penned. What further insanity awaits in the magical adventures of the Moonstone family and their sensational, terrifying brand of wizardry? Mark Millar’s The Magic Order 2 goes on sale October 27th.
