Sony Pictures’ Venom is expected to release a first trailer soon. After Sony’s plan to launch their own Spider-Man-related superhero universe with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 became a nonstarter, the studio struck a landmark deal with Marvel Studios to bring Peter Parker into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, last year Sony announced plans for a Venom movie starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock with Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer attached to direct.
The announcement of the movie focusing on a character often associated with Spider-Man caused confusion among Marvel fans about whether Venom would be in the MCU or launch a completely separate superhero series. It’s still unclear whether or not Venom takes place in the MCU since Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has said it’s not in their universe, but the latest reports claim Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Peter Parker, Tom Holland, will appear in Venom. Nevertheless, while Venom’s connection to the MCU is major talking point among fans, many are excited for the film focused on Eddie Brock either way. Now, they’ll get a first look at Venom soon enough.

The Manitoba Film Classification Board [h/t Trailer-Track] has officially rated the first trailer for Venom, indicating the teaser will arrive soon. It will most likely arrive in the next two weeks so that it can be attached to Marvel Studios’ latest MCU installment, Black Panther, which hits theaters in just over two weeks time. This is also the plan for the 20th Century Fox Marvel movie, Deadpool 2, which is expected to debut its full-length trailer just in time to run prior to Black Panther in theaters.
So far, all Sony has revealed of the Venom movie is a photo of Hardy as Eddie Brock, and a video the film screened at its panel during Brazil Comic Con. Of course, that Venom photo did hint at five symbiotes, and we know the movie is adapting the Venom: Lethal Protector miniseries from the comics, so we know some of what to expect from Sony’s film. But for many fans of the comic book characters, how the symbiote is brought to life will have a major impact on their anticipation for the film itself. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 featured a live-action Brock and Venom (played by Topher Grace) that wasn’t well received, and left a sour taste in the mouth of many fans
As such, the Venom trailer will be a big make or break moment in terms of building hype for the movie ahead of its October release date. That said, since the film isn’t set to hit theaters for another eight months, if the trailer doesn’t win over fans, Sony has time for reshoots and alterations before the movie is rolled out. Venom recently wrapped principal photography, according to a photo posted by Hardy himself from the film’s set, but the movie will no doubt be back for reshoots since most major productions do reshoots. Undoubtedly, Sony would like to avoid major changes, but there’s a great deal riding on the success of Venom.
Sony has a few other Spidey-related movies in the works – including Silver and Black, which already has a 2019 release date but hasn’t set a filming start or cast its leads – and the studio is likely looking to Venom to pave the way for the MCU-adjunct universe. We’ll know more about what to expect from Venom, and Sony’s new superhero franchise, once the first trailer is released; according to this new report, we shouldn’t have to wait long for that Venom trailer to debut.
