Here’s everything we know about Han’s return in Fast & Furious 9. As Dom faces his past by settling the score between him and his estranged brother, Jakob, he gets another ally on his team with the return of his old friend. A long-time member of the gang, Han was presumed dead at the end The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, (the third movie in the franchise but set between the events of the sixth and seventh movies) but now he’s back, and, naturally, everyone has questions regarding the specifics of his return.

Originally introduced as Sean Boswell’s mentor in Tokyo Drift, Han’s backstory was actually properly chronicled in Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow. Due to the non-linear timeline of The Fast Saga, he’s still able to be involved in the “la familia’s” adventures in Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 before his supposed death in the Japan-set entry from the car-centric franchise. Furious 7 then further tackled the cliffhanging ending, revealing that Deckard Shaw was behind his tragic accident.

Two films later from the main Fast Saga, Han is reunited with his old gang as confirmed in the trailers for F9. As exciting as this is, however, there are a number of pressing questions regarding his return. Here’s all that we know thus far.

Sung Kang Plays Han In F9

As it is with all the times that Han appeared in The Fast Saga, the character is played by Sung Kang in F9. The actor goes way back with the film’s director, Lin, who was the one who actually incorporated him into the Universal Pictures franchise after Better Luck Tomorrow. The filmmaker also helmed all the installments in the franchise that featured Han, so this makes F9 Lin and Kang’s reunion project.

How Does Han Return In Fast & Furious 9?

Han was presumed to have died in the car explosion in Tokyo caused by Deckard; by Furious 7, Dom even collected his remains and buried him back in the U.S. Yet, Han seemed to be fully physically able in the F9 trailers, hinting that he might not have even been seriously injured during the crash. There are a couple of possible explanations for Han’s “death” and return. Firstly, he may have escaped the car before it exploded. The trailers for the film hint that Letty and Mia may have recruited Han for their new mission against Jakob and Cipher, which could mean they knew beforehand that he survived the car crash; perhaps even Dom was in on the ruse to ensure their teammate’s safety. Secondly, it’s worth noting that Hobbs & Shaw introduced Eteon’s technology that essentially makes resurrection possible in The Fast Saga. Utilizing this same machinery that brought back Brixton with Han would effectively tie the Jason Statham/Dwayne Johnson-led spin-off to the main narrative.

Han’s Story in Fast & Furious 9

After directing four consecutive Fast & Furious movies, Lin left the franchise after Fast & Furious 6. His return to do F9, as well as the two-part ending, Fast & Furious 10 and 11, was a welcome development considering what he did with his previous installments. For him, however, there’s one particular reason why he wanted to revisit The Fast Saga: to properly achieve justice for Han. It’s no secret that not everyone was a fan of Fate of the Furious after it forced a reconciliation between Dom and Deckard without so much as an apology from the latter. Given this, expect Fast & Furious 9 to revisit Deckard’s crime against Han, and hopefully he, and whoever else was in cahoots with him, are held accountable for the crash in Tokyo Drift.
