F9 Ramsey Actor Nathalie Emmanuel Admits She Isn’t a Great Driver

Nathalie Emmanuel of F9 admits that she does not know how to drive. The Fast & Furious franchise has gone through an evolution, where the cars and racing that were once at the core of these films have become less important. Over time, the series has become progressively less about cars and more about large-scale missions and big action set pieces that simply happen to involve cars. The franchise trajectory has placed the series among one of the most successful for Universal.

Particularly when looking at the earlier installments, Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty and Jordana Brewster’s Mia acted as some of the only female characters with any spotlight. Over the course of multiple sequels, women have had more of an impact on the story, including the addition of Charlize Theron’s Cipher. Game of Thrones alum Emmanuel first took on the role of hacker Ramsey in Furious 7 back in 2015. Despite the fact that driving action sequences are typical for the Fast & Furious universe, Emmanuel’s Ramsey is associated more with being behind a computer to assist Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) crew in other ways than she is with being in the driver’s seat.

In our interview with Emmanuel for F9, we explored the fact that Ramsey has finally gotten the opportunity to be behind the wheel. In real life, Emmanuel does not know how to drive. To make things trickier, she was put in the driver’s seat of a large truck. Given the franchise’s big action sequences, it should come as no surprise that every action scene has gone past the scope of only car chases. See below for Emmanuel’s experience driving in the upcoming Fast and Furious sequel:

“Wow. In terms of the driving, we have a really experienced stunt team and stunt performers. In terms of what preparation goes into that, I have no idea – you’d be better off asking those guys.

For my involvement in the driving sequence, the driving’s sort of done in the location, and then I am in a stationary truck. We’re in a soundstage, doing the close-ups, because that’s the safest way to do it. Also I don’t drive, so the idea of filming me while I was driving a big industrial vehicle seems like not a very safe idea.

That’s kind of how those things are done. But in terms of my personal preparation for that, I really didn’t do any. I don’t drive; I don’t know how to drive, particularly. So, it came quite organically to me to be clumsy at driving.”

Getting to explore another side of Ramsey will be particularly interesting for the Fast & Furious series. She has always been the smart, calculated hacker, but seeing her get involved in the story in another way could be a good way of switching things up. The action genre has accustomed audiences to characters with impeccable driving skills, so introducing a character with less than stellar driving abilities provides a little bit more dimension.

Given that F9 is the ninth installment of the franchise, this iteration of the series will not last forever. Talk around a female-led spin-off is particularly thrilling, as it could open the door to more new characters, narratives, and an overall fresh direction. Emmanuel being placed in a driving scene despite her inability to drive makes for additional entertainment. In particular, allowing characters to have strengths and weaknesses in their abilities makes them a bit more relatable. Fans will have to wait and see how the franchise continues to evolve.
