Face ID Is Likely Coming To Mac But Youll Have To Wait For it

Apple might be bringing Face ID to its Mac computers, but it may take quite some time, according to a recent report. Currently, most Mac desktops require a password to sign in, while MacBooks and the newest iMac have Touch ID. Face ID is present on flagship iPhone and iPad models, so it begs the question of why it hasn’t already been added to the Mac?

On Apple’s mobile devices, Face ID is used to speed up unlocking as well as authenticating to autofill passwords and credit card details when using newer and more expensive iPhone and iPad models. Touch ID serves the same purpose on the iPhone SE, iPad Air 4, iPad 8, and iPad mini 5. Face ID has never been available on a Mac and Touch ID didn’t arrive until 2017, first appearing in a MacBook Pro. Fingerprint authentication is now common on MacBook laptops, but the 2021 M1 iMac is the only desktop to receive Touch ID.

According to MacRumors, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman for the information, Apple is expected to ultimately bring Face ID to all of its products, including the budget models and eventually reaching the entire Mac computer line. Gurman apparently didn’t reference any sources for this belief, using the terms ‘expect’ and ‘bet’ when stating that Face ID might come to the Mac within a couple of years.

Why Is Face ID On Mac Hard?

Face ID uses a depth map of the owner’s face, rather than using a photograph that’s more easily faked. The technology required to authenticate a face includes a TrueDepth camera, which is made up of an infrared image sensor and an infrared dot projector, as well as a neural processor to accelerate the pattern-matching used in facial recognition. When setting up Face ID, the owner must rotate their face to show different angles allowing a three-dimensional model of the face to be built. This allows quick, easy entry and autofill with a glance, without the need to match a particular head pose. Face ID is complicated but once that technology exists, some may wonder why can’t Apple simply put it on a Mac.

For the desktop models, an external monitor with Face ID would be needed. At present, Apple makes a single monitor, the $5,000 Pro Display XDR, which is beyond the budget of many Mac owners. The MacBook screen is quite thin, a fraction that of an iPhone, and there simply isn’t room for a TrueDepth camera. The iMac has room for Face ID, but perhaps Apple is waiting until there is a refinement or a variation in Face ID technology that enables it to fit into more devices. For now, Mac owners can use an Apple Watch to unlock their computer with ease, but Face ID might take years to arrive and will probably require a new device.
