More than a decade after its initial release, one curious player has discovered that Fallout 3’s metro tickets could be used to turn station Protectrons into friendly units. Last month, Bethesda officially updated Fallout 3 on Steam after almost 12 years, removing the requirement for the title’s outdated Gaming For Windows Live service and making the game easily accessible without requiring tedious workarounds. This exciting news allowed PC players to once again return to the Capital Wasteland and re-experience the popular post-apocalyptic RPG.
Bethesda has had many successful games over the years, but by far one of its largest franchises is Fallout. The company’s first title in the series was Fallout 3, which launched in 2008 and went on to become a massive breakthrough. The title introduced the franchise to 3D graphics and real-time gameplay in an open world, breaking previous installments’ trends of relying on 2D isometric gameplay. The 3D post-apocalyptic RPG sold very well and was considered a major success, and the many installments in the Fallout series that followed afterward expanded upon its formula.
Shared on Reddit, user Levitins_world has rediscovered a subtle Fallout 3 mechanic that puts DC’s metro tickets to use by allowing players to hack metro Protectrons. The Fallout fan states that once a metro ticket is given to a Protectron that patrols train boarding areas, these security robots will turn friendly towards the player and attack any threats within the station area. This trick can be utilized by hacking and programming Protectrons discovered in the world. If players possess a ticket, then it will be automatically removed from their inventory and the Protectron will remain friendly, continuing to walk around the metro station attacking any enemies. If they don’t possess a ticket, the Protectron will see the Lone Wanderer as the threat and turn hostile.
Protectrons are an ubiquitous presence in the world of the Fallout franchise, and they play an integral role in the history of the series as one of many symptoms of the world’s increasing reliance on technology and industry in the years leading up to the apocalypse. Before human NPCs made their way to Fallout 76, Protectrons were the only source of interaction players had with the game’s world besides notes and terminals. These robots allowed new objectives to open up, collected tickets for rewards, and played the important role of vendors.
Fallout 3 may be more than a decade-year-old, but its level of detail and volume of hidden secrets that continue to be discovered to this day remains impressive. While Levitins_world was certainly not the first to discover this Protectron trick, the fact that even dedicated fans of the game are still uncovering new mechanics is remarkable. The title is now easily accessible on PC and also available on the Xbox Game pass, so curious players can easily dive into its post-apocalyptic world for another adventure.
