Tim Burton is known for his unique visual style and gothic-esque characters. Every bit of his imagery is well thought out and all ceremoniously in sync. This is why Burton has become a beloved director, producer, and very creative writer when it comes to his world. He started out with short-films but then upgraded to well-known movies such as Beetlejuice. Starring Alec Baldwin, Michael Keaton, and Geena Davis, this kooky film tells the story of a man and woman named Adam and Barbara who recently died and once they find their ways back to their beloved home, they realize an unbearable family from the city have moved in. To get them out, they enlist in the help of Betelgeuse, a devious poltergeist who helps the deceased get rid of people living in their space.
Since its release in 1988, Beetlejuice has become a cult classic around Halloween and it one of Tim Burton’s best; but there are only so many times fans can watch it; instead, there are other movies that have the same unique touches and campy undertones as this loved film has.
10 Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Two years after Beetlejuice came out, Edward Scissorhands followed in 1990. This was the first full-length film produced by Tim Burton and starred Winona Ryder and the iconic Johnny Depp. Edward Scissorhands is a bit more serious with an interweaving romantic feel to it, but it’s also filled with Burton’s wondrous touches of fantasy and gothic vibes.
An artificial man named Edward was left incomplete after his “father” died before he could finish him. This left Edward with scissors for hands and living a solitary life. One day, a curious Avon lady named Peg knocks on his dilapidated door, and his life changes. Edward becomes a part of a family and lives life as a young man should. This film is dark, whimsical and is one of Burton’s best. In fact, of all of the movies Johnny Depp has been a part of, this is one of his best too.
9 Ghostbusters (1984)
When a movie includes the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis, fans know they are in for a treat. Ghostbusters is a film that’s been loved since its debut and really, it can be watched all-year-around. When three parapsychology professors team together to delve into the world of the supernatural, they get fired from their jobs.
They don’t stop there though, they go into a business called ‘Ghostbusters’. They discover they can make a living getting rid of the paranormal for people, but things go downhill from there. There’s evil lurking around the corner that wants to exterminate humanity and the men must stop it before it’s too late. This film had a lot of treating acting, but this is perhaps one of Bill Murray’s best roles to date.
8 The Addams Family (1991)
When it comes to iconic and well-known Halloween classics, The Addams Family sets the tone for a good family-fun film. Based on cartoonist Charles Addams’s creation in 1938, this film is a spooky tale about The Addams Family; a family living with all of the macabre goods and is also very wealthy.
When one of the family members goes missing and shows up out of the blue with his mother, is he there to reconnect with his family, or does he have other intentions? This film has all of the funny bits while having dark undertones that aren’t too scary.
7 Dark Shadows (2012)
Dark Shadows is another film directed by Tim Burton and stars Burton-favorite Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helena Bonham Carter. It was based on a 1966 soap opera with the same name but converted into a full-length film in 2012.
It starts out with a rich and powerful man named Barnabas Collins that breaks the wrong woman’s heart. Because of this heartbreak, the woman turns Barnabas into a blood-sucking vampire. When he is set free decades later in 1972 and returns to the home he once knew, he finds his dysfunctional descendants that are in desperate need of his protection and have secrets of their own.
6 Goosebumps (2015)
One of the most well-known scary television shows in the 1990s was Goosebumps. The monsters were scary, the storylines were good and for that reason, it was very popular. The concepts were taken from the equally successful novels by R.L. Stine and made for television for viewing pleasure. Fast forward to 2015 and a film was born. This could’ve gone all wrong, but fortunately, it was very well-perceived.
The new Goosebumps is about a teenager that befriends the daughter of R.L. Stine, played by comedy icon Jack Black. Stine’s horror-themed creations are set free in the town of Madison, Delaware, and all three must team up and put them back where they belong.
5 The Haunted Mansion (2003)
Starring funnyman Eddie Murphy, The Haunted Mansion fantastical story of a realtor, his wife, and children that are summoned to a mansion. After a horrible storm starts up after their arrival, they find themselves stuck in the mansion, with the living and the dead.
Jim Evers, played by Murphy, soon unearths the mystery of the mansion and how his wife could be connected.
4 Corpse Bride (2005)
If viewers have seen at least one Tim Burton film, they’ll know that Corpse Bride has his name written all over it. Corpse Bride tells the animated story of a shy groom named Victor Van Dort that is about to marry his love. As he nervously practices his wedding vows, he believes he’s alone while doing it; but in reality, he’s in the presence of a young woman that is deceased. Thinking he has asked to marry her, she rises from the grave and assumes her bridal position.
Played by Johnny Depp, Victor goes to the underworld with his new bride and experiences an entirely new world of people that have once lived in his town and gets a sense of what it is to be dead.
3 Casper (1995)
The 1990s were a good decade for spooky, but family appropriate films, and Brad Siberling’s Casper was one of them. Based on the Harvey Comics cartoon character named Casper, this was brought to life in 1995 and starred Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, and the voice of Devon Sawa.
When an afterlife therapist named Dr. Harvey and his daughter Kat move into a crumbling mansion, they meet a friendly ghost named Casper. Dr. Harvey is there to rid the premises of wicked spirits but finds out they may not be the villains.
2 Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
One of the most well-known films written by Tim Burton is The Nightmare Before Christmas. This is one of the best claymation films and was before its time in 1993. Another plus is that The Nightmare Before Christmas is also another movie that the whole family can enjoy.
When Jack Skellington, the “King of Halloween Town,” is unhappy with the repetitiveness of his life and wants more. After the town’s Halloween celebration, he takes a walk and stumbles upon trees with portals into other holidays. He falls into Christmas Town and takes the holiday into his own hands, but not everything works out how he wants it to.
1 The Frighteners (1996)
After a tragic car accident that ends the life of Frank Bannister’s wife, he discovers that he now has the ability to communicate with the dead. He uses this as a con at first, but when a demonic spirit comes to him, he learns that might be the only man alive that can effectively stop it from killing the living and the dead alike.
Being one of Michael J. Fox’s best-ranked films, The Frighteners is a film to see to get into the Halloween spirit or for any time of the year.
