Fantastic Beasts 3 May Repeat Harry Potter’s Golden Snitch Trick

With the recent release of both a trailer and a trailer teaser for the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, it seems like Dumbledore may be using the same trick with Golden Snitches as he did in Harry Potter. On December 10, Warner Bros. released a trailer teaser for Fantastic Beasts 3, unveiling the first full trailer the following Monday. While the full trailer revealed more information about the plot and characters in The Secrets of Dumbledore, both videos prominently featured the same object: a Golden Snitch.

While a Golden Snitch is traditionally used as a flying ball in the wizarding sport of Quidditch, it seems to serve a different function in Fantastic Beasts 3 media. In the trailer teaser, Dumbledore catches a Snitch in his hand while walking down a street. A Snitch flies near Hogwarts in the full trailer, but it is noticeably distant from the Quidditch field. This is not the first time that a Golden Snitch has been important outside of the game of Quidditch. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Dumbledore left Harry the first Snitch he ever caught in his will. While Harry initially believed the Snitch had no purpose beyond its sentimental value, he later discovered that the Snitch served as a way for Dumbledore to safely give Harry a message after his death.

Similarly, Dumbledore may be using the same tactic in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. According to one trailer breakdown (via YouTube), this emphasis on Golden Snitches may hint that Dumbledore and his allies are using Golden Snitches to send secret messages. Benefits to using Snitches for communication include not only their secrecy but their ability to send both messages and objects.

As established in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Snitches have “flesh memory.” This means that Snitches are enchanted to remember the first person who touches them and only respond to that person. For Harry, he had to touch his lips to the Snitch that Dumbledore left him since he originally caught it in his mouth. This made the inscription “I open at the close” appear, allowing only Harry to read it. In Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, this would make Snitches an ideal form of communication. Due to flesh memory, secret messages would be safe from both Grindelwald and the Ministry of Magic if needed.

Additionally, Golden Snitches are useful because they not only show short messages on the outside but can hold small objects within them. For example, the Snitch that Dumbledore left to Harry bore an inscription whenever he pressed his lips to it. However, once Harry was ready to die to defeat Voldemort, the Snitch opened. Inside, the Snitch contained the Resurrection Stone, which allowed people to see their loved ones who had died.

This characteristic of Golden Snitches could benefit Dumbledore and his allies in Fantastic Beasts 3 because it would allow them to safely send small, important objects. If shrunk into a smaller vial, a Snitch could even transport the blood pact between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, which prevents them from fighting each other. In this way, the Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore trailers’ inclusion of Golden Snitches hints at not only Dumbledore’s method of communication with his team but a step toward breaking his blood pact with Grindelwald.
