Fantastic Beasts 5 Reasons The Scamanders Are The Most Dysfunctional Siblings (& 5 It’s the Goldsteins)

The Fantastic Beasts saga may be just beginning, but audiences have already been introduced to several characters. Among them are two pairs of siblings. From the first film in the series, the Goldstein sisters, Tina and Queenie, seem to have a strong bond and a very close relationship. However, and judging from the events of the second film, not everything is as perfect as fans believed.

The Scamander brothers, on the other hand, have a much more confrontational relationship from the start. The Crimes of Grindelwald makes it clear that these two have a lot of unresolved issues, that can only get more complicated going forward. With so many problems surrounding them, who really is the most problematic pair of siblings? Chances are, they are both equally chaotic.

10 Goldsteins: They Had To Raise Each Other

Tina and Queenie were orphaned when they were still children. This meant that the two had to effectively raise each other, something that altered their sibling relationship permanently, creating a deeper, stronger bond between them. However, it also blurred the lines of their sisterhood, with each becoming surrogate parental figures to each other.

This complex dynamic stayed with them into adulthood. And although the two shared a similar path, even living together and working at the same place, there was bound to be a moment when one of them finally broke away. Queenie did it first, and their relationship quickly deteriorated, showing how flawed it had always been.

9 Scamanders: Newt Is Intimidated By Theseus

Fantastic Beasts 5 Reasons The Scamanders Are The Most Dysfunctional Siblings (& 5 It’s the Goldsteins)

In their first scene together, Newt barely makes eye contact with his older brother. While it’s true that Newt is a somewhat awkward young man, who finds it hard to relate to others, it’s also clear that his feelings towards Theseus are altogether different.

Throughout both films, Newt is sometimes referred to as Theseus’ younger brother. When the Scamander name is mentioned, others express contempt, and even disappointment to learn that it’s Newt instead of Theseus. In other words, Newt has always lived under Theseus’ shadow, which has not only taken a toll on his self-worth but also on their dynamic as brothers.

8 Goldsteins: Tina And Queenie Don’t Trust Each Other

Fantastic Beasts 5 Reasons The Scamanders Are The Most Dysfunctional Siblings (& 5 It’s the Goldsteins)

By the time The Crimes of Grindelwald comes along, it’s clear that Queenie and Tina are living separate lives. And despite the fact that they both seem to be basically up to date with each other’s whereabouts, they purposely leave each other in the dark about key aspects of their situations.

Queenie didn’t tell Tina what she was planning to do with Jacob, knowing that the former Auror would not only disapprove, she’d most certainly stop it. For her part, Tina didn’t confide in Queenie about her investigation or her suspicions concerning Credence, which arguably leads Queenie right to Grindelwald.

7 Scamanders: Newt Does Not Fit In Theseus’ Life

Theseus is a successful Auror working in the Ministry of Magic. With a bright future ahead and engaged to a member of one of the most prominent Wizarding families, he seems to have a picture-perfect life, with little to no room for oddities.

Logically, Newt’s quirky style and sensibilities would have no room in Theseus’ perfect conventionality. During the second film, the Auror even tries to convince his younger brother to work for the Ministry, in an effort to make Newt more normal, and therefore acceptable. The fact that Newt refuses keeps the brothers at odds with one another.

6 Goldsteins: Queenie Is Too Reckless

Queenie’s decision to put Jacob under a love spell is all kinds of wrong. It’s not only the fact that she’s literally coercing him into a relationship, she’s also endangering her and her sister’s futures. Furthermore, her decision to join Grindelwald, almost on a whim, proves how immature she really is.

These are just things that further separate her from her sister. Tina is level-headed, serious, and responsible, while Queenie is much more free-spirited, but also reckless and impulsive. The fact that this led to them being on opposites sides of an upcoming war can only complicate things even more.

5 Scamanders: Theseus Cares Too Much About What Others Say

On par with his seemingly perfect life, Theseus is shown to be rather vain and prideful. He gives great importance to other people’s opinions, unlike his more individualistic brother, who lives in his own, rather unique and slightly chaotic way.

This way of seeing things definitely contributed to the separation between the brothers. Theseus, a traditionalist, looks down on Newt’s controversial path, incapable of understanding why his brother seemingly wastes his life away, and degrades the family name, by studying magical creatures. Little did he know, Newt would eventually become the star of the family.

4 Goldsteins: Tina Doesn’t Respect Queenie

Fantastic Beasts 5 Reasons The Scamanders Are The Most Dysfunctional Siblings (& 5 It’s the Goldsteins)

From the first film, it’s clear that Tina doesn’t really see Queenie as an equal. Instead, she sees her little sister as someone she needs to mother and protect. This could perhaps explain Queenie’s immaturity, and her need to constantly depend on Tina for emotional support.

Considering Tina did a lot of Queenie’s raising, it’s logical that she’d feel responsible for her sister, even into adulthood. However, Tina doesn’t give Queenie the respect she deserves, and might even still see her as a child. With Queenie officially in Grindelwald’s ranks, it’s almost certain Tina will blame herself for her sister’s fate.

3 Scamanders: There’s A Lot Of Jealousy Between Them

For all the animosity between them, the Scamanders are also quite jealous of each other. Theseus, to a certain degree, resents the freedom that Newt has, and the attachment that still lingers between him and Leta. For his part, Newt is envious of his brother’s reputation, not so much of his success, but rather of always being overshadowed and compared to him.

Both brothers would wish to be rid of such feelings, but can’t help to feed them by their own continuous actions. By the end of The Crimes of Grindelwald, they both seem to have found a middle ground, especially after the events that took place at Grindelwald’s rally.

2 Goldsteins: Queenie Joined Grindelwald

The fact that Queenie ends the second film in Grindelwald’s ranks is bound to be a major plot point in the third film. It’s hard to imagine Tina being understanding of her sister’s choice, and their relationship will be severely damaged by this betrayal.

However they manage to repair it is still unknown, but Tina’s mistrust of Queenie will only increase. On the other hand, Queenie’s taste of freedom, and perhaps even power, will make her less dependent on Tina. If everything goes right, they might even come out with a stronger, more mature, and stable relationship, born out of their learnings while apart.

1 Scamanders: Leta Lestrange

If there’s something, or rather someone, that truly stands between the Scamander brothers, it’s Leta Lestrange. She shared a deep connection with Newt ever since their days at Hogwarts, and he was quite possibly in love with her. By the time of The Crimes of Grindelwald, she’s engaged to Theseus, but still harbors feelings for Newt.

Leta’s sacrifice at the end of the film ensures that she will no longer come between the Scamanders. Her final words, a love declaration possibly made towards both brothers (or perhaps just Newt), might complicate things for the siblings, but with everything going on in the wizarding world, it’s possible they will simply choose to let go of the past and focus on the future.
