Warning: This article contains major spoilers for F9 (Fast and Furious 9).
It’s fairly common for a Fast & Furious movie to make fans suspend their disbelief over the theatricality involved, but there are usually explanations given for in-universe logic. F9’s story saw Dominic Toretto and his crew get back into action to fight his brother and locate the Aries device, with Han Lue also returning despite having been believed to be dead.
The premise itself set up a number of questions over how things could be possible, and it turns out that F9 left a lot of answers hanging. This means several aspects just don’t make sense, with these ranging from character decisions, plot holes, and even the lack of physics.
10 Why Jakob Didn’t Tell Dom The Truth About Their Father Earlier?
Jakob was different from normal villains in that he was made out to be a sympathetic Fast & Furious character, who was wrongfully exiled by Dom for seemingly causing their father’s demise. In their confrontation before the climax, Jakob revealed that their father had told him to sabotage his car and the accident was his own fault.
What doesn’t make sense is why Jakob so readily revealed this information to Dom during F9 and not when they were younger. He had no qualms with sharing the truth in the end, yet he didn’t think to do so back when it would have salvaged his relationship with Dom.
9 Cipher’s Sudden Attempt At Revenge Over Dom
By the events of the movie, Dom and Letty had been living by themselves for a number of years, with Cipher never having threatened them in the interim. She was free until the beginning of F9 when she was apprehended by Jakob, meaning she had all the time she needed to get revenge on Dom.
However, she decided to do so at the movie’s climax by using her drone and was incensed when she was unsuccessful. This was when Dom fully prepared for her attack, so it doesn’t make sense why Cipher would make her move then and not when he wasn’t expecting it.
8 Why Mia Didn’t Track Down Jakob Through Mr. Nobody
Mia revealed to Letty that she’d been in contact with Jakob for some time after his exile and even broke into a police database to try and track him when he stopped talking to her. While Dom never changed his stance on the lack of loyalty Jakob showed their family, Mia was clearly hoping to reconcile with her brother.
If that’s the case, then it doesn’t make sense why she didn’t ask Mr. Nobody to track him down during Furious 7, seeing as he had connections worldwide and would have easily located him. What’s more, it turned out Jakob used to be Mr. Nobody’s agent, so finding him would’ve been even easier.
7 Jakob & Otto’s Plans For Aries
It was never actually stated that Otto and Jakob planned to use Aries for nefarious means, with the former even telling Cipher that their plan actually made them “good guys.” Not only was the actual plan not revealed, but it doesn’t make sense how it could have benefitted anyone either.
After all, activating Aries involved finding Han’s adoptive daughter and using her DNA, all of which was without her consent. Moreover, Otto and Jakob killed a number of people to attain Aries, putting blood on their hands straightaway and instantly making them bad guys.
6 What Happened To Mr. Nobody?
Although Mr. Nobody has been intentionally kept as a mysterious figure, there’s no explaining how he was never found. After all, it was confirmed that he went down in the plan Jakob attacked, yet Mr. Nobody’s body was never found and none of his present whereabouts were detailed.
Since the main reason Dom’s crew got into the conflict in F9 was to find Mr. Nobody, it’s strange how they didn’t try to recover information over where he could be and how he disappeared in the first place.
5 The Physics Of A Car In Space
F9 pushed the boundaries of believability to the absolute limit as Roman and Tej were shown heading into space. The really bizarre aspect about this was the fact that they left on a car rather than a spaceship.
According to the movie, the only requirement was to have a rocket strapped to the car to allow the duo to become astronauts. The physics behind this was never explained other than that the rocket was enough to boost for them to go to space.
4 Jakob’s Sudden Abandonment Of His Mission
Despite having a number of characters, F9 had few with genuine story arcs (although Jakob did get one). His main mission was to activate Aries, for which he even threatened his family and took down his former boss in Mr. Nobody.
By the end, though, Jakob was very willing to abandon his plan after Otto’s betrayal. This doesn’t make sense since Jakob was only using Otto for his resources and his goal of using Aries was independent of this. And yet, Jakob easily let go of his mission upon reconciling with Dom as if it didn’t mean anything to begin with.
3 Why Mr. Nobody Would Conceal Jakob’s Identity From Dom
F9 answered several long-running questions about Dominic Toretto, namely the backstory of his family. It turned out Jakob was Mr. Nobody’s rogue agent, meaning the latter knew him before he met Dom in Furious 7.
With this in mind, it makes no sense why Mr. Nobody didn’t tell Dom about his younger brother the whole time, especially since Dom had started considering him as part of their family. Mr. Nobody was also aware of the Toretto family history, so concealing information about Jakob has no purpose attached to it.
2 Han Confronting Shaw After So Many Years
The stinger of F9 had Han confront Deckard Shaw for unknown reasons, leaving it to be resolved in the next movie. While it was an adequate sequel hook, Han’s move isn’t exactly logical since this confrontation came so many years after it was due.
It also meant that Han knew of Shaw’s whereabouts the whole time, which in itself negates the need for him to have faked his death since he would’ve been aware of where his enemy was at all times. Although the sequel will no doubt shed light on this, F9 made it all too confusing.
1 The Truth Of Han’s Survival
F9 revisited the moment fans have wanted answers over for several years, with Han’s “death” shown once again in greater detail. However, this didn’t carry any sensible explanation, as Han revealed that Mr. Nobody had conducted a magic trick of sorts.
Onscreen, it appeared as if Han had teleported from the scene of his car crash over to the top floor of another building. It’s not possible for him to disappear from one spot and reappear in another, yet this is exactly how it was shown in the movie and Han never bothered to clarify.
