Star Trek: Picard season 2 now has an official release date in February 2022 along with a brand new trailer. A follow-up to the second series in the franchise, Star Trek: The Next Generation, the show follows Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard as he navigates old age in the Star Trek universe. The first season of the series premiered in 2020, and while it wasn’t warmly received by fans, it was watched enough to secure it a second season.
It has already been announced that this new season will pair Picard with his old TNG nemesis, Q (John de Lancie). Q is a trickster entity not unlike Loki in the MCU, so while he helped the crew of the USS Enterprise-D, he could never be fully trusted. Q can’t resist poking fun at Picard even in the direst of situations, and given the way plot details are coming to light from this new season 2 trailer, things couldn’t be direr, so Q has a lot of fun coming his way.
Paramount+ revealed the brand new trailer during the Star Trek: Picard panel at today’s live-streamed Star Trek Day global event. Not only does the trailer announce that the second season will premiere on Paramount+ in February 2022, but it was also confirmed at the panel that the show will be returning for a third season as well. The trailer, which effortlessly blends the serious and the silly, gives viewers a closer look at Picard’s animosity with Q, the first look at Annie Wersching’s Borg Queen, and details about the imminent danger the future finds itself in. Watch the full trailer below:
It certainly seems like retirement won’t be so easy for Captain Picard. Patrick Stewart gamely embodies the gravity of the overall season arc, but his comedy chops come to light from time to time, especially in the clip where he interacts with Q à la Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon. In addition to Stewart, season 2 also stars Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, and Brent Spiner, reprising his role as Data.
Star Trek: Picard has some ground to cover if it wants to regain the audience goodwill the first season lost, but it looks like they’re playing their cards very wisely. They’re evoking nostalgia by bringing back more beloved characters, but remixing the narrative with the time travel plot device that will bring said characters smack dab into the 21st century. Viewers who were skittish about the show may want to hop in and see where things go from here.
