Fast & Furious 9 Release Date Delayed A Full Year Due To Coronavirus

Universal has officially delayed the release date for Fast & Furious 9 by a year to Spring 2021, in response to concerns over the coronavirus situation. As the world responds to the disease’s global outbreak, the entertainment industry at large has already been affected in major ways. Events such as SXSW, E3, CinemaCon, and ACE Comic Con have already been cancelled over concerns about the disease spreading due to the large crowds in attendance. Similarly, major upcoming releases like No Time to Die and A Quiet Place Part II have now been delayed from their original late March and early April launch dates.

Recently, Fast & Furious star and producer Vin Diesel offered his assurances that wouldn’t happen with Fast & Furious 9, ahead of the film’s schedule release in late May. However, as the coronavirus situation continues to fluctuate, it’s a promise that he simply could not keep. Now, the next installment in The Fast Saga (as the franchise was renamed by Universal earlier this year) has also been postponed.

An official statement was released by Universal today, confirming Fast & Furious 9 has been delayed by nearly a whole year to April 2, 2021 instead. You can read their announcement below.

To our family of Fast fans everywhere,

We feel all the love and the anticipation you have for the next chapter in our saga.

That’s why it’s especially tough to let you know that we have to move the release date of the film. It’s become clear that it won’t be possible for all of our fans around the world to see the film this May.

We are moving the global release date to April 2021, with North America opening on April 2. While we know there is disappointment in having to wait a little while longer, this move is made with the safety of everyone as our foremost consideration.

Moving will allow our global family to experience our new chapter together. We’ll see you next spring.

From a healthy safety standpoint, it makes perfect sense for Universal to postpone Fast & Furious 9’s release until they have a better understanding of the situation with the coronavirus. Financially, though, there’s just as much reason to push the film back. The Fast Saga is a huge draw at the international box office; both 2015’s Furious 7 and 2017’s The Fate of the Furious grossed over $1 billion dollars outside the U.S. alone. As theaters close down in major movie markets like China, South Korea, and Italy, Fast & Furious 9 would’ve been in danger of taking a significant hit at the box office, had it stuck to its previous global rollout plan. And with the movie release schedule already heavily packed for the rest of the year (for now, anyway), that meant there was nowhere for Fast & Furious 9 to go but the Spring 2021 date the studio had initially claimed for Fast & Furious 10 back in 2016.

Following Fast & Furious 9’s move, that leaves Disney’s Mulan and Black Widow as the only major live-action tentpoles still scheduled to open between now and the second half of May (with 20th Century Studios’ The New Mutants being a runner-up). While the studio cancelled the red carpet portion of Mulan’s European premiere, they’ve yet to delay the movie from its global release over the next few weeks. Black Widow is also staying put for the moment, if only because of the problems it would cause for Marvel Studios by being delayed (due to the nature of the MCU). Still, as evidenced by what happened with Fast & Furious 9, that may very well change as studios continue to adjust to the coronavirus outbreak.
