Fast & Furious Why Shaw Killed Han (Instead Of The Others)

Here’s why Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) went after Han Lue instead of Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) or any other member of his crew in Fast & Furious. In light of Sung Kang’s return to the car-centric saga, there’s a renewed interest with the character and his arc in the franchise. Of course, the biggest talking point when discussing Han is his supposed death in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

The timeline of events about Han’s involvement in the film series is admittedly a bit confusing. Originally introduced in Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow, Han was brought in for Tokyo Drift after the filmmaker was tapped to helm the third installment of the long-running franchise. Although it released first in cinemas, the events of that Japan-set installment takes place before Furious 7, explaining the character’s appearances in Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6. Han’s involvement in Dom and the crew’s encounter with Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) effectively put a target on his back by Deckard, who was motivated to seek revenge for what happened to his brother.

While Han was part of the mission that resulted in Owen being comatose, he didn’t play any special part in it. Like in their previous outings, it was a team effort from all the members of Dom’s crew who have developed a close-knit relationship over the years. Still, Deckard decided to kill Han instead of all the other people who factored in his brother’s state — why? The answer is quite simple, Deckard went after Han because he was isolated in a foreign land — a strategic move as he knew that Dom’s team works the best when they’re all together.

At the end of Fast 6, Han decided to separate from the group to take some time off after the tragic death of his girlfriend, Giselle (Gal Gadot). At the beginning of Furious 7, which overlaps with the events of Tokyo Drift, Deckard infiltrated the DDS facility in Los Angeles to get intel on Dom’s crew to begin his revenge. As he learned about the team’s information, including their current whereabouts, he figured it would be much easier to take down a member located far from the rest, making him the most vulnerable. This doesn’t mean, however, that Deckard didn’t have any plans to go after the rest of Dom’s crew. If anything, his attack on Han was merely the first step in his elaborate plan; it effectively sent a warning to Dom that he’s coming for all of them. This is the reason why mere minutes after Deckard ambushed Han in Tokyo, Dom and Mia (Jordana Brewster) received a letter bomb supposedly from Japan.

In hindsight, the reason why it looks like Deckard only went after Han was because he’s the only casualty from the younger Shaw brother’s retaliation. After Han’s presumed death in Tokyo, Deckard pretty much failed in his subsequent plans, with Dom’s team coming out of Furious 7 intact while he’s taken into custody by DDS Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). Now that Han is back with Dom, it’ll be interesting to see how Fast & Furious will deliver the much-clamored for justice for what Deckard did to him, especially considering how the team’s relationship with him has progressed in the last film.
