Chucky Why Jake Working With Chucky Is The Best Thing For The Series

Jake teaming up with Chucky is the best thing for the new Chucky TV show. The series premiere, “Death by Misadventure,” introduces Jake Wheeler, a bullied teenage artist who lost his mother in a car crash, and has a tense relationship with his alcoholic father, Lucas. After the two have a heated argument at the end of the episode, Jake wishes Lucas was dead — and Chucky grants that wish by killing Lucas. The episode ends with Chucky revealing he’s alive to Jake, complete with him offering a plan to kill Lexi, one of Jake’s tormenters.

Chucky serves as a follow-up to Cult of Chucky and a continuation of the main story following Brad Dourif’s take on the killer doll. Cult of Chucky ends on a cliffhanger, with Andy Barclay being locked up in a mental institution, while Chucky has transferred his soul into Nica, heading off with Tiffany to go on a new killing spree. The premiere of the new series Chucky sets up a whole new story that sees the doll joining forces with Jake, carrying out revenge.

Though the premiere only implies that Jake may partner up with Chucky, it would be the best direction for the series. The lead kid teaming up with Chucky to carry out his crimes is a concept that has not been tackled before in the Child’s Play franchise (although Don Mancini came up with the concept for the original Child’s Play film). This will allow the series to become its own thing while honoring its roots.

The original three Child’s Play films paired Chucky up with a child, be it Andy or Tyler. While both were aware of Chucky being alive, Andy tried warning others, while Tyler was unaware of Chucky’s true nature until much later in Child’s Play 3. Andy and Tyler also both went against Chucky in the final act in order to put a stop to his carnage. This formula grew stale for many viewers, hence Child’s Play 3’s poor performance and the subsequent franchise revamp with Bride of Chucky. In Chucky, Jake, by contrast, remains in his room and locks the door instead of warning Lucas about his suspicions for Chucky, only coming down when it’s too late to save Lucas. Though Jake did not kill Lucas directly, through inaction, he allows Chucky to commit his first murder. This offers a new dynamic between the lead kid and Chucky that sets itself apart from the original films.

With the series set to be finally tackling Chucky’s backstory, there’s an opportunity for parallels between the serial killer and Jake. In the premiere, viewers see small snippets detailing what led to Chucky becoming a murderer, such as his parents being killed when he was a child. With Chucky back in Hackensack, it seems viewers will get to see more of Chucky’s backstory fleshed out, and it could be used to mirror Jake’s downfall. It’s also plausible to believe Chucky will use his tragic past to feign empathy for Jake and manipulate him for his own ends. This offers internal conflict for Jake, as the series will likely show him wrestling with guilt while embracing his darker impulses, something that Mancini’s original concept alludes to. Ultimately, it’s unclear as to whether or not Jake will join forces with Chucky in the Chucky TV show. Still, doing so is the best way for the series to feel fresh and reinvigorate the Child’s Play franchise. From what the premiere and the rest of the season imply, it’s sure to be an exciting experience.
