FFXIV How to Dive and Swim Underwater

While swimming has pre-existed in Final Fantasy XIV in areas like Eastern La Noscea’s Costa del Sol, the Stormblood expansion allowed players to dive underwater and explore brand-new depths beneath the sea. The ability to swim underwater isn’t just exclusive to Stormblood, for players will return to the subaquatic world during the Shadowbringers storyline as well. Being able to traverse under the sea adds a whole new layer of exploration as the flying mechanic introduced in Final Fantasy XIV’s first expansion, Heavensward.

Players should note that they will only be able to dive and swim underwater in Stormblood and Shadowbringers. Trial players only have access to the game’s first two chapters, meaning they will need to own Stormblood to explore its underwater areas. Unlike flying, players cannot venture into the aquatic depths of previous regions in A Realm Reborn or Heavensward. However, Mounts in Final Fantasy XIV can also dive and swim underwater.

To dive and swim underwater in Final Fantasy XIV, players need to reach the Level 63 quest “In Soroban We Trust,” unlocked during the MSQ. First, players must travel to a location called Tamamizu within the Ruby Sea. Then, after meeting with Alisaie on an island, players enter a cave and jump into the water below. The quest comprises a few cutscenes, so no effort is needed to unlock the ability to dive underwater in FFXIV.

How to Dive and Swim Underwater in Final Fantasy XIV

To dive underwater, players need to be in an area deep enough to submerse themselves beneath the water’s surface. Such locations include the Ruby Sea or the large lake in the Azim Steppe. Once the player is swimming in the water, press the buttons or keys that are set to descend while riding a flying Mount. The default keys for PC are Spacebar and CTRL. PlayStation users should use the Circle button on their controller, and Xbox players can use the B button.

If players are on a Mount that can fly within their current zone in Final Fantasy XIV, they can fly directly into the water to dive automatically. Once players get used to diving and swimming underwater, they can take on a host of new activities, such as unique side quests, gathering resources beneath the sea, and even Spearfishing. For example, to unlock Spearfishing, players must speak with Sumitsubo in The Ruby Sea at X: 28.9 Y: 15.9. He will provide the quest, “A New Fishing Ex-spear-ience,” which can be accessed at Fisher Level 61.
