Square Enix’s massively popular Final Fantasy XIV is still coming to Xbox consoles, according to Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida. Critics and players alike panned the Final Fantasy MMORPG upon its initial arrival in 2010 on PC, eventually culminating in the publisher’s decision to close the servers in late 2012. FFXIV resurfaced in 2013 for PC and PS3, however, with a 2.0 patch that essentially rebooted the experience to much success.

Post-launch expansions have continued to build upon the MMORPG’s core foundations. The first of such content releases, Heavensward, introduced a new level cap and job classes in mid-2015. Stormblood arrived approximately two years later as the second expansion pack, introducing battle system changes, an increased level cap, and a fresh batch of dungeons. July 2019 ushered in the advent of Shadowbringers, which debuted an extra dimension, NieR: Automata-inspired content, and the playable Viera and Hrothgar races. Given FFXIV’s recent surge in popularity, and the imminent release of Endwalker, one question continues to linger – where’s the Xbox port?

In an Easy Allies interview about the Endwalker expansion (via The Gamer), Naoki Yoshida addressed whether Final Fantasy XIV would still migrate to Xbox systems. He noted that discussions with Microsoft are ongoing and, fortunately, tend to trend towards a “positive-like tone.” Yoshida continued, “I don’t want to say we do not have an Xbox version, but I’m hoping that the timing will be very soon that I will have some kind of update to the players.” While he can’t divulge specifics, the Director said he’s “sure” the time will come for an Xbox announcement.

Yoshida’s comments don’t specify what could be causing the lengthy wait. At the very least, though, the Director seems confident that Xbox players will eventually get their hands on what now counts as most profitable Final Fantasy game in history.

Of course, Xbox owners, as well as players on other platforms, also continue to patiently await the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Marketing materials ahead of release suggested the remake’s PlayStation exclusivity would last only 12 months, leading many to believe news of PC and Xbox versions would surface in Spring 2021. That time has passed, however, and it appears Square Enix is no closer to lifting the lid on when FFVII Remake will launch elsewhere.
