FFXIV Server Capacity May Not Be Increased For Years

Square Enix has a plan in place to deal with Final Fantasy XIV server capacity and long player login queues, but director Naoki Yoshida implies it might not be implemented for quite a while. Traffic has been booming for Square’s massively multiplayer online RPG over the past month or so, with the game setting a new concurrent player record on Steam earlier in July. It’s so popular, in fact, that some players wait in login queues just to play it, which sometimes takes hours.

The initial Final Fantasy XIV launch back in 2010 was met with a cold reception due to its gameplay and user interfaces feeling unfinished, leading to Square Enix shutting down its servers a mere two years later. After this, the game underwent a series overhaul in both its content and development staff, being relaunched in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Since then, Final Fantasy XIV has been redeemed among fans, adding four major content expansions to date and earning an ever-growing army of devoted players – so much so that the game’s developers are now figuring out how to deal with server overflow.

In a recent update on Final Fantasy XIV’s official website, producer & director Naoki Yoshida detailed his team’s plans for addressing current server and login issues, noting that server capacity might not be expanded until the game’s 7.0 update. After more than a decade, the game is currently approaching version 6.0 with the upcoming Endwalker expansion, so that wait might be long one. Yoshida states:

“A fundamental solution to congestion is an increase in World servers, as well as the addition of data centers. As we have already announced, we are currently in the final stages of preparing our new Oceania data center. At the same time, we have been moving forward with plans to expand even further – putting wheels into motion in the form of approving budgets, securing funding, and purchasing equipment. We intended to assess user numbers and planned content after the release of 6.0, and then work to have new servers or data centers prepared for 7.0.”

The “6.0” Yoshida refers to in his letter is the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker expansion, which is set to launch in November. Given the amount of time that passed between it and the previous Shadowbringers expansion (which was released back in 2019), it stands to reason that the next expansion, and with it Yoshida’s suggested server increase, won’t come for another couple of years. In the meantime, players will have much to look forward to in between login wait times, as Endwalker will bring even more lore to Final Fantasy XIV on top of a brand-new Reaper character class.

It appears that players’ current issues with login queues are not going away all on their own. However, it’s great to know that the developer has plans in place to address these concerns, with some Final Fantasy XIV server solutions being rolled out much sooner than an overall capacity upgrade.
