FIFA 22 How FUT Heroes Could Change Ultimate Team

FIFA 22 is set to launch on October 1 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. As with every modern edition of the game, EA Sports is putting work into improving Ultimate Team. The mode lets players build their dream team by earning new cards through gameplay or purchasing packs with either in-game currency or real-world money. Over the past decade, it has proven to be a massive money-maker for EA, making it a key mode for the developer.

One of the stand-out new features for Ultimate Team in FIFA 22 is FUT Heroes. This new form of player cards are similar to Icons, but with a few important differences. Unlike Icons, Heroes don’t appear to have multiple versions that are released throughout the game cycle. They also don’t have the versatility Icons do in terms of chemistry.

In FIFA, players have to build their squads around chemistry. Essentially, this is a measure of how connected cards are to each other. For example, cards from the same league or nation will link together, improving their stats as a result. If cards don’t have a nation or league link, then they won’t get that same boost. Icons link to everyone, making team-building much easier. Hero cards in FIFA 22 won’t have that same flexibility as they only link to other cards with the same league and nation.

How Will FUT Heroes Shape FIFA 22?

On the surface, Heroes cards in FIFA 22 may seem much less desirable than Icons. While it’s true that Icons will almost always be better than Heroes, these new card types open some interesting opportunities for EA Sports. The first is that it gives them a chance to bring fan-favorite players from smaller nations back into the game. The United States, for example, doesn’t have any players that could be considered an icon of world football, but plenty of U.S. fans play FIFA and want athletes like Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, and Tim Howard in the game. With Hero cards, this is finally possible. In fact, Dempsey is one of the first nine players confirmed to have a FUT Heroes in FIFA 22. By introducing a lesser version of Icons, EA is able to satisfy players from those smaller nations and add even more diversity to the player pool.

The other potential big change that could come alongside FUT Heroes is that EA might use them to make Icons more accessible. EA has done this to some degree in FIFA 21 with David Beckham. When he was added in the middle of the season as a new Icon, he was also given a lesser card from his days at Real Madrid. With the introduction of Heroes, FIFA 22 might look to do that with more Icons. It’s easy to imagine a lower-rated Ronaldo playing in the Eredivisie or a Zinedine Zidane that only links to Ligue 1 players.

This kind of flexibility would make it easier for players to acquire their favorite stars from yesteryear. Those cards wouldn’t be the best version of those Icons, but it would at least give everyone the chance to play with some of the game’s best without needing to break the bank buying points in FIFA 22.
