Final Fantasy 7 is one of the best and most beloved JRPGs ever made. It is also a fairly broken game with plenty of glitches and bugs that are just waiting to be exploited by players. The most notable of these is perhaps the W-Item glitch, which allows players to repeatedly duplicate almost any item in the game with relative ease.

As its name might suggest, the glitch centers around Final Fantasy 7’s W-Item materia, which is designed to allow players to consume two items in a single turn. With a little bit of trickery, however, players can use the materia to duplicate any useable item in their inventory as many times as they’d like. Despite the notoriety of this exploit, it remains present in every version of the game to date, including the recent PS Now release.

How to Perform The W-Item Glitch

In order to duplicate items, players will need to have either W-Item or master command materia equipped on one of their party members. Once in battle, they’ll then need to select the W-Item command, choose any item, and then confirm its use.

Next, players will want to choose the item that they’d like to duplicate, but once the cursor is over a character’s head, they’ll need to hit the cancel button rather than confirm. Doing so will increase the number of the second item by one, and players can repeatedly select and cancel it until they have 99 of them.

How to Duplicate Non-Battle Items

For as useful as the W-Item glitch is, it does have its limitations. The biggest of these is that it can only be used to duplicate items that are usable in battle. This means that, amongst other things, Sources are unfortunately off the table. At least that’s what some would have others believe, anyway.

By placing just one of any useable item at the very top of the item list, players can combine the Morph and W-item commands to duplicate Sources and other items that are obtained through morphing. To do this, they’ll need to be up against multiple enemies and instruct a party member to use Morph on an enemy that can be turned into the item that they’d like to duplicate.

Before the enemy is morphed, players should use W-Item with another party member and have the first item they use be the one at the top of the list. This should lead to the item obtained through morphing appearing in the empty space, at which point players can then use the original W-Item glitch method (repeatedly selecting and then canceling without ever actually confirming) to duplicate it up to 98 times.

This method can also be combined with the Steal command to duplicate certain weapons and armor, though there’s very little advantage to doing this. Most tend to use the glitch to provide themselves with infinite Megalixirs or to max out every party members’ stats, though it’s also a great way to earn Gil for those who lack the patience to grind.
