Firefly Had A Hidden Star Wars Easter Egg All Through The Show

Firefly was a space Western television series that drew inspiration from Star Wars – and it turns out the show had a very specific Star Wars Easter egg hidden in several episodes. Created by Joss Whedon, who is also known for his work in the Marvel cinematic universe, Firefly debuted on the Fox network in 2002. The show received low ratings initially, leading to its premature cancelation before all fourteen of its original episodes aired. However, the show’s DVD release led to a surge in popularity, securing a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003 and inspiring fan campaigns that rallied for its return. This success led to a franchise that now includes a comic series, role-playing game, and Serenity – a 2005 spinoff film that continued where the show left off.

Featuring an ensemble cast, Firefly explores the lives of nine characters who exist in the year 2517 and inhabit the spaceship Serenity. During this period in the future, humans have arrived in a new star system since the Earth-that-was doesn’t exist in Firefly. The crew travels to unknown parts of the galaxy and tries to make a living as renegades on the outskirts of the pioneer society. The series portrays a fusion of cultures under a Chinese-American authoritarian government known as the Alliance while also blending elements from the Western and space opera genres. According to a Serenity’s DVD extra, this depiction came from Whedon’s idea that “nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today.”

Firefly has multiple allusions to Star Wars, but several episodes contain a specific Easter egg from the iconic space opera franchise. In the background throughout several scenes, a small replica of Han Solo frozen in carbonite from The Empire Strikes Back is visible. For example, “The Message” features the replica next to Kaylee (Jewel Staite) as she sits in her hammock. During “Jaynestown,” it’s up on a shelf above the bartender. There’s a rumor that Han is in the background of every episode.

According to Reddit, this placement occurred as an intentional choice by Firefly’s prop department. Nathan Fillion, who played the lead of Captain “Mal” Reynolds, is reportedly a huge fan of Star Wars – he even owns a blue lightsaber (via Entertainment Weekly). The Firefly crew decided to hide the 12-inch replica in various spots around the set as a joke for Fillion, whose character as a renegade captain was partially influenced by Han Solo.

In fact, Star Wars appeared to have some significant influence on Whedon, as the Han Solo prop isn’t the only reference in Firefly. Whedon used the legendary Millennium Falcon as design inspiration for Serenity, and other Star Wars spacecraft are actually used during some episodes. During the pilot, when Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin) docks her shuttle with the Serenity, an Imperial Shuttle from Star Wars is visible as it flies in the background. A Starlight Intruder can also be spotted in the episode “Shindig” as the characters land on the planet Persephone. These Easter eggs are a treat for fans of Firefly, who still regret that the show was gone so soon.
