Flashpoint Explained DC Comics Story & The Flash Movie Connections

DC’s FanDome 2021 revealed a teaser trailer for The Flash starring Ezra Miller, and it carries some large inspirations from the classic Flashpoint storyline. Arguably one of Barry Allen’s most famous stories of the modern era, Flashpoint sees Barry Allen attempting to save his mother from being murdered in the past, resulting in an entirely new timeline and reality being formed in the present. Likewise, this first look trailer for The Flash features some particularly telling sequences that confirm a version of the iconic story will indeed be told in the DCEU.

While it’s been known for some time that both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s versions of the Batman will be featured in The Flash (an indication of a multiversal storyline), concrete details as to the plot have been scarce beyond the promise of Flashpoint. Now, this new teaser confirms that Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen will be going down the same path as his comics’ counterpart, which will ultimately lead to his entire reality’s detriment.

Flashpoint was the terrifying catalyst event for DC’s entire New 52 relaunch that saw their entire comics universe being rebooted with new origins, character designs, and histories. As such, it seems as though The Flash could be the most important upcoming DC film, as it relates to the DCEU’s future. Here’s how The Flash teaser trailer connects to the Flashpoint storyline and what that means for DC films going forward.

What Is Flashpoint In The Comics

Flashpoint Explained DC Comics Story & The Flash Movie Connections

Published in 2011 by writer Geoff Johns with art by Andy Kubert, Flashpoint is a major crossover event that also features several tie-in issues that flesh out the new timeline Barry Allen inadvertently creates. By running into the past to save his mother from being murdered when Barry was a child, the entire DC Universe is drastically altered as a consequence. Bruce Wayne is killed in a Gotham alley while his parents survive to become a brutal Batman and Joker in their shared grief. While Superman crashes to Earth, he’s immediately taken into government custody to be experimented on, never seeing the light of day. Additionally, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are locked in a brutal and bloody feud, leading their respective nations of Themyscira and Atlantis to war against each other and bringing the world to the brink of WWIII.

While those are only some of the biggest changes, plenty of alterations big and small occur including Barry Allen waking up to this dark new reality without his connection to the Speed Force. After teaming up with Thomas Wayne’s Batman to get his speed back, Barry eventually realizes his terrible mistake and attempts to restore the timeline back to what it was. However, Barry is only somewhat successful, as he’s unable to return the DC Universe to what it was exactly, serving as the in-universe cause for The New 52’s relaunch.

The Flash Movie Is Adapting Flashpoint

While it doesn’t look like Ezra Miller’s The Flash will be doing a direct adaptation of Flashpoint, it does appear though the film directed by Andy Muschietti will be doing its own version while still carrying many of the core beats. For example, the teaser trailer sees the Flash in his brand new suit arriving at a house at night, presumably his childhood home seeing as how the next shot sees Barry Allen out of costume approaching the same house in the daytime. One can infer that the Flash most likely prevented his mother’s death in the past, visiting the house to see if his plan worked in the present. Likewise, it certainly seems to have been successful seeing as how he approaches a woman in the kitchen who is most likely his own mother Nora Allen — alive and well.

However, the problem with Barry altering his past for his own benefit is that it more than likely cause a domino effect of detriment to the greater DC Universe at large. While said consequences might not be exactly the same in The Flash as the ones seen in DC Comics’ Flashpoint, it looks like Barry’s response will be similar, such as his desire to team up with a Batman who is not the one he’s always known — in this case Micheal Keaton’s Batman as opposed to Ben Affleck’s.

What Flashpoint Means For The DCEU’s Future

Because Flashpoint resulted in the entire DC Universe getting rebooted, it stands to reason that The Flash could do the same thing for the DCEU. It’s no secret that the trials and challenges of Zack Snyder’s Justice League have put Warner Bros. in an interesting situation when it comes to continuity. As it stands, they seemingly want to continue the stories of individual heroes such as Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash — but not others. Beyond his upcoming presence in The Flash, there has been no word about Affleck’s future as the Dark Knight, and there’s likewise been no movement or news about Henry Cavill’s Superman. Likewise, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg film has been taken off of Warner Bros’ production slate, most likely due to the behind-the-scenes tensions between the actor and the studio in relation to his treatment during Justice League’s controversial reshoots.

As a result, The Flash could very well be the vehicle to shake up the DCEU’s timeline, acting as a soft and organic reboot just like Flashpoint. At the very least, The Flash’s multiverse powers and ability to time-travel using the Speed Force opens a plethora of narrative avenues where Warner Bros. and DC can essentially do whatever they want — like bringing back Keaton’s Batman. Despite the teaser trailer being so short, it’s already evident that The Flash is going to be a massively significant film for the DCEU thanks to its Flashpoint connections, and it will most likely make just as much of an impact for the films as the major crossover event did for the comics. The Flash is scheduled to release in November of 2022.
