FNaF World Is a Far Better Game Than You Think

Five Nights At Freddy’s has had a serious impact on the horror game genre, with each new entry managing to expand on the core routine-focused survival gameplay. Even the entries that aim to reinvent the franchise, like the recently released Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach, keep the core gameplay mechanic of figuring out the enemy patterns to survive. Part of FNaF’s appeal is how each game puts a slight spin on its own formula, but there was one game that was a bit more of a surprise than fans were expecting.

FNaF World was heavily teased by series creator Scott Cawthorn in the months leading up to its release. Cryptic images on the website fnafworld.com hinted towards the game featuring an all-star roster of FNaF’s animatronics. The game’s unique art style was also revealed via these teaser images, being the earliest hint that this would be a different game than what fans were expecting. Rather than a jumpscare-filled atmospheric horror game, FNaF World ended up being an unexpectedly cutesy indie RPG.

While the change in direction for the series was certainly a surprise, it wasn’t the only reason the game wasn’t received well. By Cawthorn’s own admission, FNaF World was rushed out of development and ended up far less polished than what many FNaF fans had come to expect. Cawthorn eventually took the game’s first version off Steam after fans heavily criticized the repetitive gameplay and unappealing art style.

If that were the end for FNaF World, then its status as the black sheep of the franchise would be more than justified. However, the game would be reuploaded to GameJolt for free just a month later, with an expansion-sized update also being added in May of 2016. This new version of the game is far better than the initial release, though many FNaF fans still regard it as this strange misstep that’s only worth playing for a few small bits of lore hidden in the game’s free expansion.

FNaF World is still currently free on GameJolt and is worth checking out, as it’s a wonderfully charming RPG with enough references to the series to please any super-fan. While the shift from survival horror to JRPG parody might be jarring for some fans, rest assured that there are still tons of FNaF-brand horror to discover. FNaF World is far better than many fans think because it manages to balance fanservice with a strategically solid RPG system, all while still parodying both the RPG genre and itself.

Although simple, the combat system in FNaF World still has a decent amount of strategy. Players build a party of three characters, with each character having three abilities that typically either deal damage or provide support to the party. These fairly straightforward RPG mechanics are easy to learn while still having a level of strategy that keeps the game from being too easy. Many enemies and some tongue-in-cheek minigames help break the repetitiveness that plagued the game’s initial release.

One of the biggest highlights of FNaF World is its roster of 40 characters that connect to nearly every FNaF game released before FNaF World. While almost every canon animatronic that had appeared in the games up until this point is present, there’s also a hefty selection of extra characters thrown in. One highlight is Purpleguy, who quickly tells the player that they aren’t the real Purple Guy. There’s also FNaF 2’s secret animatronic RWQFSFASXC, which fans otherwise referred to as Shadow Bonnie.

A ton of FNaF World characters would eventually appear in FNaF’s next big all-star game, Ultimate Custom Night. Old Man Consequences is a character from one of Scott Cawthorn’s older games who appears in FNaF World when the player dives too deep into the game’s code. Without touching on spoilers, fans of the series are well-aware of just how important Old Man Consequences is to the lore of Ultimate Custom Night as well as the fourth-wall-breaking horror he brings to the game.

There’s a lot of secret lore for the series tucked away in FNaF World, though whether or not it’s canon is a topic of debate in the fandom. For example, a secret ending both teases and seems to show the origins of FNaF: Sister Location’s Circus Baby, though how it truly fits into the series is still a bit of a mystery. Many of the secrets in FNaF World are just as open-ended and mysterious, making it a perfect game for those who are deep into the story of the series.
