Fords New Bronco Sport Has Parts Made Entirely Of Plastic Ocean Junk

Ford has announced that it now uses 100-percent recycled ocean plastics to create a component in the Bronco Sport compact SUV. The world’s plastic waste problem keeps growing every year, creating an environmental nightmare. Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in the oceans rather than in landfills, killing marine life and adversely affecting the ecology.

The increasing amount of plastic in oceans often clusters together and forms large masses of floating trash, the most notorious of which is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It reportedly has a surface area of 7.7 million square miles, roughly twice the size of Texas. While conservationists have been trying to clean up the garbage, they’ve often faced criticism for their methods and green costs.

Ford claims to have become the first automaker to use 100-percent recycled ocean plastics to produce car parts. In a press release this week, the company said that the wiring harness clips in the Ford Bronco Sport are produced using discarded plastic fishing nets in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, saving marine life and reducing manufacturing costs for the company. It’s a tiny component but Ford says it is looking to increase the use of recycled ocean plastics for other parts and other models. The company further claims that recycled plastic produced from ocean debris is qualitatively comparable to petroleum-based resin, but offers a cost savings of 10% and requires less energy to produce.

The Recycled Plastic Comes From ‘Ghost Gear’

According to Ford, much of the plastic used to produce the harness clips comes from ‘ghost gear’, or nylon fishing nets that are discarded in oceans. This poses a grave danger to marine life, entangling and often killing a wide range of sea creatures, including fish, sharks, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, and birds. Recycling them, therefore, is vital for saving the ecology and protecting vulnerable marine life. Per the press release, the strength and durability of the recycled material are equal to virgin plastic despite spending so much time in salt water and under beating sunlight.

Ford also claimed that it has been using recycled plastic in its vehicles for more than two decades, although this is the first time that it is using recycled ocean plastic to create auto parts. According to the company, the underbody shields on the 2020 Ford Escape were made using recycled water bottles, but the use of recycled ocean plastic in the Bronco Sport opens up new avenues to clean up ocean debris without adding more non-biodegradable plastic junk to the landfills.
