Forget SpiderMan Andrew Garfields Best 2021 Movie Role is On Netflix

Despite Spider-Man fan hype for Andrew Garfield’s teased appearance in the MCU’s upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor’s performance in Netflix’s Tick Tick… Boom! looks to be his best movie role of 2021. Although it may not get the fan hype that a return to his former superhero role might, Tick, Tick… Boom! allows Andrew Garfield the opportunity to showcase a greater range and widen the breadth of roles he could be considered for in the future.

Netflix’s Tick, Tick… Boom! is a movie adaptation of the autobiographical stage musical of the same name by famous composer, Jonathan Larson (creator of Broadway’s Rent). Garfield portrays 29-year old Jonathon, an ambitious theatre composer aiming to change the face of musical theatre in 1990’s New York City. A struggling artist in the truest sense, Jon navigates his way through the stresses of poverty, relationships, and the upsets associated with the AIDS epidemic, as he works tirelessly to mount his revolutionary new sci-fi musical. As the clock ticks down to his 30th birthday, the challenges stack up against Jon, who struggles to keep his dreams alive without exploding under the pressure.

Playing a character who races against time in New York City to defeat the odds stacked against him is nothing new to Garfield. As the titular role in Sony’s 2012 film, The Amazing Spider-Man, he tackled great hurdles, going up against Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and learning what it takes to be a hero. Garfield fans certainly enjoyed his comedic chops as the web-swinger. However, they can witness an even greater range of talents from the celebrated actor as he moves from Marvel superhero to the Broadway superhero Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom! – a superior role for Garfield than his (likely limited) appearance in No Way Home.

Director Lin-Manuel Miranda (Tony-winning creator of Broadway’s Hamilton!) chose Garfield to play the lead character in Tick, Tick… Boom! before knowing he could sing. After watching Garfield’s Tony-winning performance in the Broadway play Angels in America, Miranda felt his spidey-sense tingling. He cast Garfield and from there, the multi-layered actor pushed through his inhibitions to not only learn how to sing, but to ultimately drive home a Broadway-worthy vocal performance. He also learned to play several parts on the piano, as he prepped for what could become the role of his career.

Music isn’t the only place where Andrew Garfield flexes his talents. Tick, Tick…Boom! finds him climbing to new heights as an actor as well. Andrew Garfield is known for playing brooding characters in Hollywood. Even Spider-Man’s alter-ego, Peter Parker, went from charming geek to tortured orphan in Garfield’s hands. In Tick Tick…Boom!, however, he tears through those expectations, bringing an enthusiastic, even gleeful energy to the role of Jonathan Larson, fully embodying his zest for life.

No doubt, Marvel fans are excited by the prospects of Garfield donning his former web-slinger garments to appear next to Tom Holland (and Tobey Maguire) in Spider-Man: No Way Home. A pop-up moment like that, however, will most-likely be short-lived and not as explosive as his Tick, Tick…Boom! performance. Of course, if Marvel or Sony ever decide to bring Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark to the big screen, it’s not impossible that Garfield may once again return to the title role, transitioning from a web-slinging Spider-Man to a web-singing Spider-Man.
