Former Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl running back Marion Barber III was found dead by Frisco police on Wednesday. The Fort Worth-Star Telegram’s Clarence E. Hill Jr., was first to report the news, which included Barber’s body being discovered after police were called to his apartment to do a welfare check.
‘We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III,’ the Cowboys said in a statement released Wednesday evening. ‘Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Barber, who would have turned 39 next week, played seven seasons in the NFL, including six with the Cowboys, making the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he rushed for a career-high 975 yards. In the playoffs that year, he had a 129-yard divisional round game against the New York Giants, who edged the Cowboys 21-17 and went on to win the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys took Barber out of Minnesota in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. In six seasons in Dallas, Barber rushed for 4,358 yards and 47 touchdowns, which ranks fourth in Cowboys team history behind only Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett and Ezekiel Elliott. Barber was released after the 2010 season and signed with the Bears where he rushed for 422 yards in one season before retiring.

Since he retired, Barber had been arrested a couple times, including being detained and taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation in 2014.

Barber’s younger brother Dominique played safety for the Houston Texans from 2007 to 2011. Their father Marion Barber Jr., played running back for seven seasons with the New York Jets in the 1980s.
