Friday the 13th Part VII The New Blood Was Basically Jason vs Carrie

For as long as horror has been a genre in cinema, audiences have clamored for their favorite icons to clash, especially when the tropes of each respective franchise have grown stale. This is perhaps best seen with Freddy vs. Jason. Though the cinematic crossover did happen in 2003, the “clash” was originally going to take place early, but instead fans got Friday the 13th Part VII. While the face off against Krueger was scrapped temporarily, Jason did go against a telekinetic teenager who strangely resembles an iconic Stephen King character, Carrie.

The development of Part VII was fraught with conflict over the direction the franchise should take after the reinvigorating Part VI, leading to two pitches. One aimed to make the film more awards-friendly by courting art-house directors and modeling the plot after Jaws. The other was screenwriter Daryl Haney’s “Jason vs. Carrie.” Despite failing to actually acquire another horror IP to fight Jason, this pseudo-crossover was still a fairly novel idea at the time.

The plot of Part VII (subtitled The New Blood) fits well into the Friday the 13th blueprint while also injecting some much needed King energy. Telekinetic teenager Tina Shepard is taken to a cabin in the woods near Crystal Lake to be studied further by her psychiatrist. Next door, a group of teens are partying, and one of them, Nick, takes a liking to her, and she begins hanging out with them. However, Tina becomes overwhelmed, being bullied by both her doctor and peers. To make matters worse, her powers accidentally awaken and free Jason Voorhees, who has been chained at the bottom of Crystal Lake.

As soon as the movie starts, Tina is shown to share many qualities with King’s eponymous heroine. She is a shy, blonde girl who lives alone with her mother and is fearful of the psychokinetic power she wields. Luckily, Tina is not abused by a religious fanatic. While her mother is loving, she does allow Tina’s psychiatrist to verbally abuse and gaslight her. Tina is also bullied by her peers, who taunt her for her mental health problems. Luckily, she doesn’t kill her tormentors like Carrie did.

When Tina and Jason finally face off, the initial pitch of “Jason vs. Carrie” is finally paid off. In this one-on-one battle, Tina proves she’s more creative than Carrie. She throws furniture, appliances, houseplants and even part of the roof at Jason. She even squeezes his mask so hard that blood and pus ooze out until the mask breaks. There are also some nice nods to Carrie’s notable kills in the final battle, with Tina utilizing fire and electricity, much like Carrie during the infamous prom massacre. Tina also tosses nails into Jason in a similar manner to how Carrie dispatches her mother.

However, where the characters diverge most is their conclusions. In Carrie, the teen becomes a monster, with the years of abuse finally taking its toll on her. Tina, on the other hand, is a triumphant hero, using her abilities to take on Jason and save herself and Nick. It almost feels like a catharsis for Carrie fans who wanted to see the bullied teenager gain redemption.

Although a definite step down from the terrific, self-aware sixth installment, The New Blood is a gonzo showcase in special effects, and it could be seen as the precursor to horror fans’ growing obsession with horror crossovers. After this film’s release, the concept of crossing over two horror protagonists seemed like a more viable option. This obsession also led to films such as Alien vs. Predator, the long-anticipated Freddy vs. Jason and numerous other match-ups in comic books.
