Friends: 10 Things About Ross That Have Aged Really Well, Actually

Fans of Friends often disparage Ross for being less likable than the other characters. But, in some respects, the character has aged very well.

David Schwimmer’s Ross Gellar, one of the six leads of the classic NBC sitcom Friends, is often thought of today as one of the least likable members of the titular group, with many of his attributes coming off as unseemly or even creepy when viewed from a modern perspective. Some viewers may even dislike the formerly beloved character for some of these traits.

However, while there are certain things that have not aged well about Ross as a character, many viewers often overlook some of his very best qualities, especially those that have only gotten better with time. While he is far from perfect, Ross has plenty of characteristics and iconic moments that remind us why we love him.

Reaction To Joey And Rachel’s Relationship

In a relationship doomed from the start, Joey and Rachel began dating in the tenth and final season of Friends, much to the chagrin of Ross, whose relationship with Rachel had been the primary dramatic turmoil of the series for the past nine years. After learning that the two had begun a relationship, Ross is clearly disgusted, doing a very poor job of hiding his disdain for their romance.

While Ross’s attitude of denial is mostly played for laughs, it very much speaks to the fan reaction to Rachel and Joey’s relationship, as very few seemed to be in favor of such a turn. When looked at today, Ross may very well have been the only one who had any sense when it came to this specific series of events.

Letting Rachel Live With Him

Ross and Rachel were not always on the best terms, with much of their time on the series being spent broken up, divorced, or unsure of where each stood with the other. Nevertheless, the two characters often found ways to show the other just how much they really cared, regardless of their turbulent relationship.

When Rachel has Ross’s baby, she is unsure of her future, leading Ross to open up his “bachelor pad” to her and baby Emma, an act which remains one of the nicest things Ross ever did for Rachel. Though viewers now know that the two would later end up together once more, the fact that Ross had no romantic relationship with Rachel at that point in time is a good reminder of the kind of man he really is.

Prom

One of Ross’s finest moments comes in the form of a VHS tape, where the events of Rachel and Monica’s prom night come to light years later. In the tape, it is revealed that Ross had planned on taking Rachel to prom after she was seemingly stood up by her date, only to learn that he had acted only a few moments too late.

Looking back on this moment with the benefit of knowing how their love story ends, Ross filling in for Rachel’s missing date proves to be a genuinely sweet moment that highlights the best part of their relationship. This is the Ross that Rachel falls in love with over and over again.

Selfless Love

Though fans tend to remember some of Ross’s more egregious errors in the dating world, few seem to recall some of his finer moments when it came to love. While he was far from the perfect boyfriend on many occasions, for the most part, he portrayed a portrait of selfless love to those with whom he engaged in a relationship, both romantic and platonic.

On multiple occasions, Ross proved himself to be quite caring and selfless, including giving up major job offers in order to take care of Rachel, walking his own ex-wife down the aisle at her second wedding, and trying to save some of Monica’s childhood souvenirs that had been destroyed by water damage.

“Nerdy” Habits

Ross is often made fun of by his friends for his “nerdy” habits, which include a love of comic books (he even made his own as a child called “Science Guy”), a martial arts obsession, and his infamous career as a paleontologist (or, as Joey would say: “He likes dinosaurs”).

Despite the many jokes made at Ross’s expense, many of his hobbies that were considered “nerdy” in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when the show aired, have now become mainstream interests. Comic books and their subject matter have seen a surge in popularity, karate is still very much in fashion, and a pursuit of the sciences is encouraged. Had Ross grown up in a different generation, he would have likely seen less ridicule for his interests.

Relationship With Ben

Though Ross is often overly analytical and sometimes vindictive, he shows his true colors when it comes to his son, Ben. Regardless of whether or not a viewer is a fan of Ross, they would have to admit that he is truly a loving father to his son throughout all ten seasons of the hit series.

Ross makes an effort to spend time with his son despite the divorce with Ben’s mother Carol. While his insistence on being a part of the child’s life was admirable at the time, it has become increasingly so according to modern sensibilities. With divorce rates higher in today’s world, it is nice to see a healthy co-parenting relationship portrayed between a divorced father and the son he had with his ex-wife.

Mature Adult

Though he has his bouts with immaturity, Ross seems to be the most mature out of his friend group. While most of the other friends tend to have trouble keeping a steady job, this is not something that Ross has a problem with throughout most of his time on the show. The character also seems to have a better understanding of the world than the others, having adjusted to adult life rather well.

What makes Ross’s maturity so respectable is his willingness to share it with others. Ross often proved himself to be a good friend by advising his closest companions in the best ways to navigate adult life, even if they weren’t always receptive to his suggestions. Yet, he was always ready to help when they truly needed it.

His (Many) Antics

While many of the friends are constantly cracking jokes, Ross doesn’t seem to quite have the same tenacity and witty repertoire as his companions. Even so, he remains one of the funniest characters on the series, living out his jokes rather than slyly quipping with the others.

Many of Ross’s hilariously outrageous antics remain classic even to this day. There is no shortage of iconic scenarios that only Ross Gellar could stumble into, like accidentally over-whitening his teeth or “creating a paste” when trying to slip his leather pants back on.

Never Gives Up On Love

Ross was without a doubt the character on Friends that struggled the most when it came to looking for love. Between countless relationships and no fewer than three divorces, Ross’s search for the perfect soulmate was filled with drama, heartbreak, and despair.

Despite his many misfortunes in romance, Ross never seemed to give up on finding the perfect woman for him. His relentless (and sometimes ill-advised) perseverance leads him to finally make things work with Rachel in the series finale, a feat that season 1 Ross would be proud of.

A Good Friend

While some may find Ross annoying–and perhaps for good reason–there is no denying that he makes a concerted effort to be a truly good friend. Part of what makes the character so appealing for all his faults is that he does have a genuine outgoing concern for his closest companions.

Ross’s love for his friends manifests itself in different ways, such as helping Phoebe learn to ride a bike for the first time, teaching Rachel how to do her laundry, or one of the countless other things he did over the course of ten seasons. Ross may not be everyone’s favorite friend, but he is a good one nonetheless.
