Frozen 3 Isnt Happening (Yet) Says Josh Gad

Frozen 3 isn’t happening quite yet, according to Olaf actor Josh Gad, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever. The first Frozen took the world completely by storm when it was released in 2013, winning audiences over with its heartwarming story and a little song called “Let It Go”. A sequel seemed inevitable after Frozen grossed over $1.268 billion worldwide, but Disney took a while to bring it together. Frozen 2 finally hit theaters last year, six years later, and became the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Since then, the question on everyone’s minds has been if Disney will pull a third film out of the franchise.

Following Frozen 2’s release, directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee were asked about the possibility of a Frozen 3. At the time, Lee said she felt Frozen 2 was a complete journey, though she seemed to acknowledge that could change in a year. Disney hasn’t indicated they’re considering a third Frozen film, though they have found ways to produce new content for the franchise. Gad briefly returned to the role of Olaf for a digital spin-off series back in April, and Disney+ is releasing a making-of documentary for Frozen 2 at the end of this month.

During an interview with PopCulture, Gad was asked about whether Frozen 3 is on the way. “Wouldn’t that be a great, non-sequitur just amazing announcement to make,” he joked. However, if he had gotten any fans’ hopes up with that statement, Gad quickly followed up with the reality of the situation by saying this:

I don’t know. I mean, here’s the deal. Frozen II wasn’t Frozen II until there was a reason to exist. And similarly, I don’t know if and when there will be a Frozen III. That’s way above my pay grade, but what I can tell you is this: There was an opportunity to take these characters and bring again a sense of hope and inspiration. And it’s why the team at Disney and I teamed up on the past couple of weeks to do At Home with Olaf […] And so the Frozen saga continues, even if it’s not necessarily in the form of a third movie. But we’ll see! If there’s always a story worth telling, I’m sure that Jennifer Lee and the incredible team over at Disney animation will tell that story one day.

Gad’s comments echo Lee’s from before, indicating Frozen 3 hasn’t been entirely ruled out. Frozen seems to be one of the rare franchises that doesn’t immediately order a sequel after achieving monumental success; instead, it’s about the story and whether or not there’s actually a need for it. Frozen 2 wrapped up Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa’s (Idina Menzel) stories rather completely, but one could also argue the original Frozen did that as well. There are some plot threads Lee and Buck could pick up on if they felt the urge to, but there also isn’t a pressing need for it at this time.

Considering how long it took for Frozen 2 to hit theaters, it wouldn’t be that strange for Frozen 3 to have a similar timeline. This means it could be years before Frozen 3 (should it ever happen) comes out, and that Disney not announcing anything just yet doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen. Frozen 2 pulled in a lot of money for the studio, so it’s likely that they’re at least toying with the idea. It sounds like for now, though, fans will just have to wait and see.
