Futurama Leelas 10 Best Episodes Ranked

Behind every animated sitcom doofus, there’s a strong woman. Fred Flintstone has Wilma. Homer Simpson has Marge. Peter Griffin has Lois. And, even in the distant future, Philip J. Fry has Turanga Leela, one of the strongest female characters in animation. Futurama may center around the exploits of a disenfranchised nerd getting the restart of a lifetime, but it’s nothing without its iconic, supporting cast, none of whom would get any work done without Leela.

Captain of the Planet Express, a cyclops looking for her people, another woman just trying to survive all the jerks in New New York, Leela is Futurama’s leading woman whose expertise and character have helped fuel some of the series’ best episodes.

10 I Second That Emotion

After Bender insensitively flushes Nibbler down the toiler, Leela becomes distraught and wishes that he could feel what she feels. Professor Farnsworth obliges and unilaterally implants an empathy chip on Bender.

With this, Bender begins to understand Leela’s feelings. However, little did she realize, she would understand his. This episode mostly built to gags where Bender would cry when Leela did, but Leela has a great moment where she turns her typically sensitive and altruistic attitude to a cruel and selfish one in order to help give Bender the drive he needed. While fans love Leela for who she is, it’s nice to see her quote Bender like everyone else.

9 A Bicyclops Built For Two

Futurama Leelas 10 Best Episodes Ranked

One of the first pay offs for Leela’s origins is in “A Bicyclops Built for Two.” After a chance encounter in a virtual chatroom with Alcazar, someone who appears to be one of her people, Leela shows what she’s willing to go through to feel connected and have purpose.

That is to say that she’s willing to sacrifice her principles. Thinking she has a duty to help repopulate the planet with him, Leela transforms into his trashy housewife who does all of his chores. Though Fry was on the case to expose Alcazar, Leela herself had to learn some self-respect. In addition to teaching fans about dignity, this episode also gave a hard tease for who Leela’s parents actually are.

8 Anthology Of Interest I

Dial L for Leela has to be one of the best stories that the anthologies ever came up with. It’s another story that takes Leela out of her initially cold and restrictive self and doubles as a campy, suspense story. Here, she uses the What-If Machine to see what it would be like if she were more impulsive and what she sees almost comes straight out of Little Shop of Horrors.

Being more impulsive, Leela is quick to kill off members of the crew whenever they become slightly inconvenient for her, showing how little patience she had for them in the first place. This leads to a variety of brilliant bits where Leela kills crewmembers for petty reasons while trying to hide the evidence in hilarious ways.

7 Teenage Mutant Leela’s Hurdles

In an effort to make the Professor less irritable and overall old, Planet Express try to use the anti-aging effects of a day spa’s pools, only to have the entire crew drastically age backwards after things go horribly wrong. While this may pose a problem for most of the crew, Leela is overjoyed since this gives her the opportunity to actually live out a childhood alongside her parents.

This leads to some adorable moments where Leela tries to facilitate a pseudo-normal childhood. She goes on a classic date with Fry, gets “grounded,” has to babysit Planet Express after the Professor makes things worse, and constantly fights with her parents, albeit to get them to act like parents.

6 The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings

Futurama Leelas 10 Best Episodes Ranked

In one of Fry’s best romantic gestures to Leela, he makes a deal with the Robot Devil to be able to play the holophonor better and create a romantic opera. He makes a deal with the Robot Devil that inadvertently has hell’s robot sacrifice his own hands to help Fry. The Robot Devil, however, wouldn’t let Fry masquerade with his hands easily and forces Leela to make a deal with him after he secretly deafens her before the show.

While the episode initially showed the lengths Fry would go to to show his love for Leela, the last act was somehow both adorable and tense for showing Leela’s attempts to still see the show. Here, Leela puts on one of her most tender performances in the series and shows some surprisingly great singing.

5 The Late Philip J. Fry

Believing that he’s ironed out the kinks in time travel, the Professor builds a new time machine that can only travel forwards in time and asks Fry to help him test it right as he’s about to be late for a date with Leela.

As all good sci-fi stories do, things immediately go wrong when the trio accidentally send themselves to the distant future. Because of this, Leela lives out an entire, bitter life, running Planet Express herself and believing that Fry abandoned her. As interesting as the trio’s adventure was, half of this episode was dedicated to showing Leela’s long road to finding peace after loss.

4 The Problem With Popplers

Of all the sordid misunderstandings that Planet Express has had with the Omicronians, their adventure with the new snack food Popplers has got to be the worst, and it’s all thanks to Leela. Here, Leela, Fry, and Bender mistake an Omicronian nesting ground with snack food and begin purveying the babies in mass on Earth.

Leela is the first to realize her mistake and hilariously tries to convince the planet that their new snack has thoughts and feelings. Despite her efforts, Earth immediately sells her out as their one sacrifice when the Omicronians arrive looking for blood. Given that Leela has fought a lot to save cute animals, it’s hilarious to see her made the bad guy by everyone else.

3 Meanwhile

Futurama’s finale never gets old, and it focuses on the series’ last time travel adventure as Fry uses the Professor’s new remote, which can turn back time a few seconds, to capture the perfect marriage proposal to Leela.

However, after a huge misunderstanding, he accidentally freezes all of time, leaving Leela and himself as the last two moving people in the world. While this would be tragic to some, they turn this into one of the series’ most romantic episodes. They use the time freeze to live out an entire, married life in solitude while having a lot of fun abusing it.

2 The Sting

One of the biggest changes to Futurama during its most recent run was having Fry and Leela actually date. Prior to that, it was more of a one-sided love, since Leela wanted to see her options. “The Sting,” however, is one of the few instances where Leela reciprocates Fry’s love, and it’s one of the most surreal adventures in the series.

After Fry sacrifices himself to save Leela from a giant, bee attack, Leela becomes increasingly distraught at Fry’s death. In her grief, she starts hallucinating Fry coming back to life and taking her on a variety of fantastical dates, only to end the fantasy by telling her to “wake up.” This only maddens Leela more and more as she finds it increasingly difficult to tell between what’s real or not.

1 Leela’s Homeworld

In “Leela’s Homeworld,” a mysterious couple of mutants save Leela and her friends after Bender’s recent, dumping business starts upsetting the sewer mutants. Curious and in another one of her fits of orphan grief, Leela pursues them, thinking they’re stalkers, but is shocked to learn that they’re actually her parents.

Wanting her to have a normal life, the Turangas apparently left her at an orphanage on the surface but continued to watch and support her in secret. Leela finds her family in the least likely of places, and it pays off to one of the series’ most dramatic, long-running storylines. It’s touching to see their reunion and utterly tear-jerking to see how Leela’s parents protected her for all those years.
