On Game of Thrones, the Faceless Men were a group of assassins in the Free City of Braavos who trained to be able to take on the faces of many different people, essentially shapeshifting and disguising their identities in order to commit murders.
Brutal, unforgiving, and expensive, if you had one on your good side, like Arya did with Jaqen H’ghar, they could help you out of a jam. But they considered themselves to be the Many-Faced God, a god of death that is accepted in every religion around the world. Before someone can join, they must first become “no one.” And as Arya discovered, that required a lot of work and sacrifice.
So while it was all very serious business, you can’t help but mimic some of the most comical things about them. Here are 10 Faceless Men memes that will have you cry-laughing.
10 Give Three Names
When Arya met up with Jaqen after having saved him from certain death, he told her he owed her. All she had to do was give him three names of people she wanted dead and he would take care of it.
This meme makes fun of that, showing Jaqen’s face as though he’s asking for three names, but then the person says his. Shoot! Now what is he supposed to do? Because as a Faceless Man, he has to honor that wish.
9 Face ID
The Faceless Men would never survive in the 21st century. Why? Facial recognition is used for almost everything, from being able to unlock your phone to scanning you at the airport when you travel.
Joining the world of Game of Thrones with present day technology, had Jaqen bought a fancy new iPhone, he would quickly have to make a trip back to the Apple Store to have it wiped because Face ID wouldn’t work. Or maybe it would go the other way and he’d be able to unlock just about anyone’s phone!
8 Drop the Mic
Someone really clever Photoshopped a microphone in Jaqen’s hand to make it look as though he had just picked it up because someone dropped it. Seemingly, Arya, who he referred to as “a girl.”
Arya was, of course, training with Jaqen until she realized she did not want to be a Faceless Man. She stole back her own sword, turned off the lights, and ferociously killed Waif thanks to her ability to fight blind because of the brief time they took her sight from her. Mic drop moment, indeed!
7 A Girl Has No Name
While training to be a Faceless Man, Arya would consistently answer the question of “what is your name?” by replying that “a girl has no name.” Eventually, she became “no one.” But imagine that as a way out of chatting with someone trying to hit on you at a local bar?
Instead of walking away or giving a fake name or reluctantly telling someone your real name, simply say “a girl has no name.” How simple is that? Though if the person is a GoT fan, that might just make them laugh and want to talk to you even more!
6 End The Series
It’s true when you really think about it. Were the Faceless Man the most powerful people on the show? While everyone was working every angle possible to kill one person or another, if someone had paid Jaqen or another Faceless Man enough to kill 10 people, they would have been able to do it in a heartbeat.
What if someone super rich visited the Faceless Men and asked them to kill Cersei, Daenerys, Jon Snow, Jamie, Tyrion, Bran – the list goes on. Maybe even the Night King! Boom, show’s over.
5 No Faces Detected
You know that popular app, How-old.net, as well as others that people use to upload a headshot and find out how old they look? Now image a Faceless Man like Jaqen trying to use it. What would the result be? “Couldn’t detect any faces” is the hilarious one in this meme.
What makes it funny, of course, is that this is the result you’d get if you uploaded a pic that was blurry or didn’t include a close-up shot of someone’s face. But here, Jaqen’s face is in clear view yet the app still can’t detect it.
4 No One is Perfect
No one is perfect, which is true. But in standard use, that terms means that literally no one is perfect. Every single person has some kind of flaw or another. And someone who is perfect to one person might not be perfect to another.
However, when a Faceless Man says this line, it’s actually a compliment. Because it means he’s recognizing the person as no one, meaning they have successful stripped away their identity and are ready to become a god.
3 The Perfect Man
When Daario meets with Daenerys and she breaks the news to him that she would like to send him off and they can’t continue their relationship, he is upset. He was hoping to become her husband one day. So he asks her if not him, who will she marry?
Her reply? Maybe no one. Of course, she means she might never get married at all, to anyone. But flip over to Jaqen, the Faceless Man, who deviously smirks at the idea. He is actually no one, so maybe she’ll marry him!
2 Using My Voice
Jaqen, the most notable Faceless Man on the series, had a strange yet calming voice. He spoke with purpose, enunciating every word and syllable. He didn’t speak much, but when he did, it was always prophetic while also completely devoid of emotion. The German actor who played him, Tom Wlaschiha, says he “tried to do as little as possible” when speaking and “kind of think the things that I’m saying.”
It was so distinct that chances are whenever you read a quote from him, you’re reading it in his voice, even if it’s just in your head. Am I right? A girl is always right.
1 Who Taught You?
When Arya displayed some serious sword skills to Brienne of Tarth, she was thoroughly impressed. Who taught you how to do that, Brienne asked? It was really Syrio Forel, a master sword fighter her father hired for her before he died. As well as training she had with the Faceless Man, Waif.
But when Arya replies “no one” it cuts to a weeping Faceless Man Jaqen who is seemingly overcome with emotion at the fact that she credited him with teaching her how to do something. Like a proud father, he has to choke back his tears of joy.
