Game of Thrones is simultaneously loved and hated by its fans, mostly because of its complex, thrilling—and sometimes heartbreaking—storylines. 10 Ned’s Story
Although Ned’s story ended before the season 1 finale, it was an intriguing one. One Reddit user said they “loved Ned’s story in season 1,” and it’s easy to see why. He was an honorable and loyal man, whose quest for the truth, unfortunately, got him killed. He was a character that fans loved and were rooting for and his death was shocking because, at that point, no one imagined such an important character could so easily be killed off.
Fans hated his death because he was such a likable character, but others hated it because it could have been avoided. Ned’s commitment to doing the honorable thing resulted in many poor decisions, like telling Cersei he knew her secret, which led to Robert’s “accidental” death and the chaos that followed. As much as Joffrey was the one who called for Ned’s head, it was Ned’s decisions set his death into motion.
9 Arya & The Hound’s Adventure
After kidnapping her to demand payment for her return to the Starks, the Hound and Arya’s friendship was a surprising, but fascinating, development of their story. Reddit user kaezermusik commented that it was their favorite storyline and said they enjoyed “the banter, the darkness, and suffering that plagued both characters, revealing the humanity around the hound’s character while sapping it from Arya.”
It was interesting how the two of them started out at odds with each other, with the Hound on her kill list and Arya as a means to an end. Their tenuous bond was captivating, but labeling it a friendship was sometimes a stretch, especially when she left him to die after his fight with Brienne. Arya’s tour of revenge got more interesting when she was alone, from training in Bravos to taking revenge on the Freys.
8 Jon Snow’s Arc
Jon Snow had one of the most interesting storylines, such as the reveal of his true identity as a Targaryen. One Reddit user, cjm0, explained in great detail why Jon’s storyline is their favorite because “it started as him being an arrogant young boy to him maturing and becoming leader.”
While the ending of Jon’s story in season 8 wasn’t satisfying, there were great highlights along the way such as his time among the wildlings, his rise through the Night’s Watch ranks, and becoming the King in the North. Unfortunately, for most fans, Jon’s storyline was ruined by the finale when nothing satisfying came of his Targaryen identity and he was sent back to the wall for killing Daenerys.
7 The Night’s Watch
The watchers on the wall weren’t really a part of the war for the iron throne that the show focused on, but their story was still a beloved one. One Reddit user posted about their “brilliant characters and fantastic story.”
The Night’s Watch had fascinating politics too that led to Jon Snow becoming Lord Commander. They were also central to the slow burn storyline of the white walkers that culminated in one of the best battles of the show. However, their connection to the white walkers—whose objective to attack men was oversimplified and disappointing—made their story less interesting for some.
6 Tyrion’s Story
Tyrion was a fan-favorite character because of his humor, wit, and intelligence—especially in politics. Reddit user Nekovivie shared his story as one of their favorite storylines and listed several things they like about it, including how he was “framed for Joffrey’s murder.”
Through every trial, he showed impressive survival skills and was one of the last men standing at the end of the show. His arc became frustrating, though, from the time he became Daenerys’ Hand in Mereen to the end because the intellect fans loved him for diminished significantly along the way. For example, he crippled Stannis’ forces on the Blackwater with a well-executed plan but believed simply talking to slavers would keep them from laying siege on Meereen.
5 Theon’s Redemption Arc
Season 8 didn’t have many redeeming moments, but the conclusion of Theon’s redemption arc was one of them. The end of his story was a satisfying one as Reddit user deceptres commented, “over the course of the show you go from hating him to feeling sorry for him to kinda liking him.”
After being hated for betraying the Starks, Theon gained the audience’s sympathy and favor when he saved Sansa and died protecting Bran. It was one of the most interesting redemption arcs on Game of Thrones and a favorite among fans. On the other hand, his part in the show wasn’t big enough for some fans to care about him or his redemption.
4 Joffrey’s Arc
Joffrey was one of the worst characters and most fans rejoiced when he died, but some enjoyed his story. Reddit user flappy_parakeet shared several reasons why he was their favorite in terms of the plot and said, “he’s objectively a terrible king and person, but for the sake of the show plotline, I really enjoyed his life storyline.”
The audience hated Joffrey because had no redeeming qualities and his death was one of the most anticipated and celebrated. His evilness was entertaining to watch as it led to some interesting storylines, but most fans hated everything to do with him because of the terrible things he did.
3 The Politics In King’s Landing
As the home of the coveted iron throne, King’s Landing was the center of many plots on the show. The Redditor, SofasInMotion, commented that some of the things they liked about King’s Landing were “the head to head conversations, the plots, the drama.”
The politics was intriguing and a key driving force behind the premise of the show. So much backstabbing, conspiracy, and death happened in King’s Landing, keeping the audience engaged. Although the political aspect of Game of Thrones was fascinating, it led to several things fans hated like the Red Wedding and Daenerys becoming a villain.
2 Daenerys’ Conquests
In a post discussing the show’s best storylines, the Redditor, oxygenpeople, commented that they liked “Danys conquest of Meereen and Astapor.” Part of Daenerys’ journey on the show was how she conquered several lands in Game of Thrones such as Meereen. She burned ruthless leaders to death and freed their slaves, establishing her as a powerful and just ruler.
Season 8 undid all that with her conquest of King’s Landing, but her earlier achievements were admirable. Because the show dragged her story on, some parts of it felt slow and boring, like her conquering of lands as she raised up her army. Hence, some fans were only interested in her story once she set sail for Westeros.
1 Tyrion & Jorah In Essos
Tyrion and Jorah crossed paths in Essos after the latter had been banished by Daenerys for spying on her and the former had escaped from King’s Landing. Reddit user Sommern shared how they enjoyed the men’s time in Essos and said the best part was “watching them just talk and learn more about each other.”
Tyrion’s journey, especially, was an interesting one as he went from serving as the hand of one king to holding the same position for a queen. Even Jorah’s attempt at redeeming himself and his fight in Daznak’s Pit was interesting, but it was a subplot that other fans didn’t care much about.
